Hi all!
I haven't posted in a while.
I have a kitten who is estimated to be around 8 weeks old (I've had him for two weeks, the vet guessed he was 6 weeks when I took him).
He was placed under a bush in a friend's back yard by his momma. There were no other kittens that she took there, only him. My friend and her neighbor decided that he wasn't safe out there because they have a hawk that visits and they were afraid the hawk would snatch him up.
I ended up with him, I named him Tiger. He drank from the bottle just fine when we first got him and had (and still has) no interest in lapping the formula out of a bowl. He also won't even taste any can food.
Tiger had some minor congestion going on when I brought him home that could be heard sometimes when he would play or get excited and start purring. The vet said he didn't hear anything at that point and said if it got worse to take him back and he'd give him an antibiotic. Well, it got worse. It was to the point that he was breathing out of his mouth sometimes (it was after hours at the vet so the poor guy had to hold out til morning)
We got him there and we were given amoxicillin to give him. Obviously, it is very small amounts at a time, two times a day.
He's been taking it for one day short of a week and he's finally sounding much less congested than he was.
The problem now is that he decided he doesn't want his milk formula he used to drink just fine. He has been offered many different kinds of wet food all of which he smells and backs away from immediately. We've mixed wet food with all the milk for cats that he liked/likes and he acts like it's poison. He won't lap his milk. It was to the point where we just went and bought a bunch of stuff to try. He likes this type of cat milk that came in a sippy type pouch but even with that he has so much (nothing like he was drinking) and he's done.
I was eating macaroni and cheese one day and he was on my lap and he was trying his best to get to my bowl. I took a tiny bit of cheese to give to him and he ate it right up. He did the same thing with eggs this morning.
I bought some wet food with eggs and cheese figuring maybe he'd give them a try but nope.
Does anyone think maybe the congestion has thrown off his taste buds and sense of smell? That's what I keep thinking. Not to mention, the poor thing hasn't had a solid bowel movement since he started on the formula when he got here. I think maybe the combination of a sore bottom and the congestion has really thrown the poor guy off.
Has anyone had anything similar? What brand/flavor of food have you found that picky kittens will actually show an interest in?
I hope I didn't leave anything out. If anyone needs anything cleared up, let me know!
