So my recently diagnosed Cleo has finally agreed to eat canned cat food, after being a dry food only girl. Unfortunately on the advice of our VET, we tried Fancy Feast and it is the only wet food she has eaten, and will eat. I wasn't comfortable with the ingredients list when we started and after upping her insulin to 2 units twice a day and no change in her blood sugar, I'm still not happy.
I want to try more natural brands but we've tried Tiki Cat, Blue Wilderness, Nutro, Crave and more and she refuses to eat.
She will only eat the Gravy Lovers Fancy Feast or the Grilled.
Are there any natural brands similar to these Fancy Feast Versions?
She likes her freeze dried treats. Are there any freeze dried cat foods?

Sorry she only likes the gravy varieties. Do you think mixing some lower carb FF varieties in with gravy types would work..adding more LC gradually as you go along? Or perhaps mixing in some home made unseasoned chicken broth to the mix, you could use the piece of chicken that you slow cook or boil for treats or toppers on the LC food, if she likes that.

You could create a signature for Cleo so that we can see her pertinent info with each of your posts and if you would like some of the experienced members to see the insulin and testing data for input or suggestions, set up a spreadsheet and plug in the data you have.

Setting up your signature (light grey text under a post). Here's how:
click on your name in the upper right corner of this page
click on "signature" in the menu that drops down
type the following in the box that opens: kitty's name/age/date of diabetes diagnosis/insulin you're using /glucose meter you're using/what (s)he eats/any other meds or health issues (s)he has. You can add your name, and a geographic location (sometimes the country/time zone matters) Be sure to SAVE when you are finished.

I was thinking about using broth with some of the freeze dried food. She has a thing about texture. She likes the small flaked, hates Pate and large morsels or large shreds, like pulled chicken
I was also thinking about trying to mix. So maybe start with half of the FF and half of a healthier version with the same flavor.

maybe be even sneakier, mix 1/4 LC with 3/4 gravy food..then just gradually add more LC..with some tasty broth and a few freeze dried bits on top?

Good point. And if we can find a texture we like, I bet if we even just took a little of the gravy, which of course is the worst part, she might go for it.
She's just so stubborn! We were surprised because we never had a problem with her refusing any of her dry food. And we always got the natural, grain free, no corn meal or by products, higher protein versions. But when we tried to switch to wet food she just refused to eat until we tried the fancy feast. Even tried mixing a little of her kibble in and if her kibble touches the wet food, she won't even eat that!!

Fancy feast is a perfectly acceptable food to feed Cleo, although preferably not the gravy versions because of carbs (of course those are always the favorites!). If she prefers flaked foods, there are some FF flaked varieties that are fine carb wise if you haven’t tried those yet. FF also has a natural line, since you mentioned wanting to switch Cleo to more natural foods, although I think they’re all pates. Weruva is also a good brand to look into, particularly the BFF line which has some foods that are kind of in between pate and chunky.

There are freeze dried cat foods if you’d like to give those a try, although I’m not sure of the carb content. I know Vital Essentials has some (my girl loves their freeze dried treats), and I believe Instinct does as well.

I know the struggle of a picky cat! I remember trying soooo many foods, begging Sophie to like one of them!

We went out today and found some freeze dried nuggets, so we are going to try that. We also got some new kibble that has raw food mixed in instead of giving her the prescription kibble that we paid $50 for that is made with corn meal, soy meal, and by products. I don't see how that is "healthier".

Thanks so much for the input!!

Try the ff roasted, flaked, and chunky variety. Maybe he’d like The texture better than pate Ang they are still lower carb.

Well our foray into freeze dried didn't go well. She loved it. Ate it all rather quickly. Then spent 10 minutes vomiting all over the house. Ugh. She is a big drinker and I think she drank too much after eating so quickly and it swelled and made her sick.

did you rehydrate before feeding?

Yes but I'm wondering if I didn't use enough water or let it sit long enough? It said to use 1 tbsp per nugget of warm water, which I did, and I crumbled the nugget and stirred around until the water was all absorbed.

ZiwiPeak is a high quality line of cat food that is pate style and low carb. They also have an air dried food line that is more like a treat -- small morsels that are high protein and low in carbs. A big plus with their canned food is there are no gums or carrageenan in the ingredients.
