? Phoebe Squeak - Any tips on avoiding fur shots? (+civvie Pic)

Hi all!
It's ironic that I'm asking this question on a day when Phoebe decided to swim with the sharks, but I'd love to know if anyone has any tips on how to avoid the dreaded fur shot. All suggestions welcome.

Hello Luigi, aren't you a cutie.

You can shave a spot. I just comb long fur back, hold it with comb and shoot (short needle) straight in side or flank while she is eating. If she isn't eating, not feeling good at all, it does happen, I shoot while she is sleeping in chair, not often but that's when I really know she is feeling bad.

I always shot Rusty in the scruff. He had long hair, so I would just pull up a clump, see skin, and shoot. But I was always good at giving fur shots, expert, one might say. I kept a fur-shot basket and every time I gave a fur shot I would put a dollar in the basket. At the end of the year I would buy a good bottle of wine.:)
 
Love the picture. I tend to give fur shots if I'm rushing or tired. Just go slow and try to make sure the needle is under the skin before you shoot.

The only time I ever gave a Fur Shot is in the beginning when I shot into the scruff. After that I only shoot into his side. Lots of room & places to shoot & I've never given a fur shot in nearly 2 years now. I don't lift up his skin.
Just part his fur till I see skin & shoot at an angle.

I read this after I did the fur shot.
"We are instructed to give the shot into the scruff at the back of the neck area which is not optimal because there isn't great blood flow in the scruff which can result in the insulin not being absorbed, or working as well as it should. The reason our vets teach us to inject in the scruff is because they won't get bitten if they give shots there. "

If you are shooting into tented scruff, one thing that helped me get used to using smaller needles was to pull the tent toward the needle with the one hand while pushing the needle in with the other (rather than just holding the tent up while pushing the needle in).

I also second the "leaving the needle in for 3 seconds" tip! The only time I've ever smelled insulin on my guy after shooting was from some coming out after the shot was finished. Since then, I hold the needle in for a few seconds and even let go of the tent with the needle still in and then pull it out.

Good to hear from you - love the pic of Luigi! Your kitties are both adorable!!!

I hope you find some great tips for fur shots - I just hold on to Miss Luci and shoot the tent - not too many furshots...
 
As soon as I feel it pook threw the skin I shot . I have been lucky not to give a fur shot as of yet but I’m always afraid I will . Salem has long hair too . But as soon as I feel that pook of the needle go thru the skin I know I’m in . So I shot quickly . I dnt shot til I feel that pook through the skin . He moves sometimes and I’m scared it will come out before I shut. Which he has done before move as soon as I pook thru the skin that is . He turns and bites at the area sometimes making the needle come out . I always try to make him concentrate on something else like eating . Or just telling him to not look turn the other way . You will be surprise how they do understand you .
