So, some excitement earlier this morning - here. I'm an hour before his AM dose time and he's at 72. I was thinking I'd feed him in 1/2 an hour and see if that brings his numbers up more. At what number should I shoot? I will be decreasing to 4 units.

Nope -- please don't feed. If you feed it artificially brings up the numbers and as the food wears off, numbers may drop again. As a result, you don't know if it would be safe to shoot. The only time you want to feed within 2 hours before shot time is if numbers are in the 40s.

Wait until AMPS -- or a few minutes before -- and then post if you're not sure whether to shoot. You want to see if numbers are rising by AMPS.

@Sienne and Gabby - I'm confused - isn't the reason you want to feed at shot time is to help raise the number? Wouldn't feeding just a bit earlier than usual be the same?

His numbers are currently rising, but I'm wondering where it's safe to shoot.

The problem is, if you have a 72 now, you feed in 30 minutes and then test him 30 minutes after that and say he is at 95, you have no way of knowing if that 95 is because of the food he got an hour ago or because of how is body is processing the insulin.

If you don't feed and he goes to 95, you know that it is just the way his body is processing the insulin and it is most likely ok to shoot.

If it ends up being the food that you gave him an hour ago, he will most likely then drop soon after that a bit from the food spike, but then you are also adding the insulin into that as well, and he may drop further.

Keep in mind that Lantus takes a couple hours to take effect AFTER it is giving, the two hours during when the shot is given and the onset of the next dose, his body is using the insulin in his depot. This is why it is often suggested to get a +2 or in some cats, like my Skooter up to a +3, to see what that dose is going to do.....

If you are going to be home to monitor, and have high carb food available along with plenty of strips, I'd shoot. Get a +1 and a +2 test to see what Phobos has in mind for this cycle.

looks like Phobos is heading up into a bounce - but i wanted to say good for you for shooting this morning! Shooting the regular dose into normal numbers is the path to getting a cat tightly regulated. The saying here is "Shoot low to stay low" because shooting low (50-120 on human glucometers) often will hold the cat's blood sugar flat for the rest of the cycle.

Have a great Saturday!
