Hi All,

Petie went up from his low of 141 last night to 185 at 3pm :(

sigh. i will get him later, just wanted to share.

We haven't had anything besides what I listed on the food list.

Hi Jackie :-D

Whatever time is 2 hours before you MIGHT shoot **if he is over 200**, put his food up 2 hours before that time. For example

If 7:30 is a convenient shot time, put his food up at 5:30 (which is 2 hours before possible shot time--so you will get an accurate blood glucose number that is not influenced by food), then test him at 7:30. When you get that number, you should have an accurate BG and then be able to make the decision to shoot or not (but no shots if he is 200 or below).

I am going to be busy for the rest of the day/evening. Daughter and her boyfriend are coming for dinner  I've been cooking/baking all day! We're having fettucine, sauce, eggplant parmesan casserole, meatballs, fancy salad, homemade bread and chocolate cherry cheesecake!!!! No dieting today

He is too low to shoot right now. It can take 72 hours or more for those other foods to clear his system.. patience!

Try not to worry, his BG is really good. However you can help more by feeding mini meals through the day instead of big ones.. It will help support his pancreas.

Thank you, Wendy! Yeah - his fructosamine came back at just a few points outside of normal - so the doc is thinking no more juice - but we'll see.

Now i am worried about his kidney levels. The Young Again has Salmon meal so I am afraid I have to stop feeding that :(

So to confirm he is just eating young again and wellness core and grain free, and tiki right now, right? As dehydrated meats.. And supplements.. Nothing else right?

Correct. However, he has decided to reject Tiki so I was trying to get him to eat By Nature since it's low in Phosphorous. The Wellness seems to make Petie sluggish. And I was told that it is a very rich food and that By Nature may be better.

What's the carbs in by nature? Remember this is a diet test on his Blood sugar. You can work on finding a food that makes him less sluggish once we bring his numbers down and heal his pancreas...

Oh shoot - i don't know what the carb rating is. It's 9% protein. How can I find the carb? It was the holistic store recommended over Wellness.

Really it depends on your goal. I thought you wanted to try confirmed low carb foods on him for a few days to see if we could get him into official remission but we don't know if this food is. So it's not a good test. You should adjust the spreadsheet to take that line out about a food test.

If you continue to feed him high carb foods, then remission becomes unlikely and he may need to restart insulin which would be a shame since it could be as simple as a food change.

That is my goal! I am so sorry, I just freaked out when Petie wouldn't eat the Tiki Cat and the Evo yesterday. Only the Wellness. And I got his kidney values so I would like to balance this all.

I just spoke to a rep from By Nature (http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/product ... at.php#ttl) and she says the Organic line is all under 3% carbs. And the phosphorous in the dry matter is .68. Even though the most wet food he eats at this point is Wellness.

Can i keep trying the By Nature then, Wendy or should I hold off and just stick with we sometimes eat some Wellness with dry food on top and the occassional lick of EVO?

Can the By Nature food really be under 3% with pea flour in it? It is the fourth ingredient but when I was researching chickpea flour (because the person who insisted that the treats I was feeding with this ingredient were nothing more than a crushed up veggie) I found it was very high carb. There is some hype about the pea flour carbs not being bad for diabetic humans but I am very wary of this.

Sometimes when my kitties get tired of the Tiki I put some parmasean on it.

Ok, so you think the By Nature is bad. Ok, we'll stick with Wellness and Evo then. But how do you think that will effect his kidneys?

Yeah see it's difficult because you are also looking a phospherous and I am not experienced with that. I feed raw with Tiki as a supplement but I don't have CRF problems. Gosh, I don't know what I would do if I did. I feel for you because I know that you have been struggling with food issues for a while now. You just might want to go off the By Nature for a couple of days and see if there is a difference in bg numbers. Geez even the Wellness Core Grain Free canned has dried ground potatoes as its sixth ingredient so the pea flour might be so little that it doesn't equate to a lot of carbs. I like the ingredient list of the EVO 95% better.

I am just wary about pea flour - but that's just me. We want Petie to continue to eat and get these good numbers.

You are doing a great job with him!

Thank you Robin. It is really difficult. I don't know what to do. Today, he isn't really eating any wet food anyway, so I am bummed.

Not even the Wellness that he slurped up all day yesterday!

Yeah - it is hard. BJM recommended Friskie Special Diet but I am not sure if that will aggravate his diabetes. Yeah, I guess I could try stuff. I do like the EVO ingredients, too - it's just impossible to get this cat to eat it!!

He does like it when I cook chicken and throw that in the blender, put some water in it and then throw some dry on top. He licks the plate there!

And, I am doing so well with Petie thanks to everyone on this board. I couldn't have gotten it through it without you all!!

Instead of the dry food on top of the chicken, have you tried Fortiflora? You could try using Fortiflora with the dry food sprinkled at first so that he relates the FF with the dry food and then you could decrease the dry and just be sprinkling the FF. Just throwing out suggestions :-D

It is difficult I know, I have a temporary foster who is a dry food addict but she is only 4.5 lbs and is in no condition to even begin to get her off because transition involves hunger and she can't afford that. So I struggle with wanting her to eat and wanting her to eat better.

If you're stuck with an emaciated cat that must eat, you do what you have to do to get the cat to eat, dose the insulin around that and later worry about food switches.

That said, there are a couple of dry food options that may be helpful - Evo Cat and Kitten dry, Stella And Chewy's freeze dried (meant to be rehydrated!), and Young Again 0 Carb (actually 5% cal from carb, also internet sales only). If testing, you may slowly blend one of those in to reduce the carb count - perhaps 20-25% change per day.

Good Morning Jackie ~O) ~O) ~O)

Just wondering when was the last time you tested Petie's blood glucose and what number you got? It would be great to see where he's at :-D
