Hi everyone,

So we've changed Petie's diet to all wet and last week he went 2 full days without poohing and he's going through the same thing now. He seems fine - a little bit of mucus throwup when I woke up, but he ate his food. We went 2 days last week without poohing and then 2 days this week without poohing - the last time he poohed, he did pooh 2x in one day.

Should I be concerned? Anything I should do?

Thanks, all!!
jackie

At the advice of someone I went out and got pumpkin puree (only pumpkin) and gave him two teaspoons with water. Hopefully that will do the trick. Anyone else experienced this?

gosh! i never realized this was a problem before. thank you for sending that link bjm. Ok, Petie just poohed - 3 hours after I gave him the pumpkin. Does anyone know if i can give him pumpkin everyday?

I believe so. The Feline Constipation web site has numerous ideas, as well as explanations of the process.

If this is just since the food change, try adding a tablespoon of water to each meal.

yes - i think we passed!!! How awesome is that - all thanks to you guys!! yesterday we got an 82 BG!! Woohoo - i need to update the sheet. We did spke to 147 but that's b/c i gave him a cantaloupe treat (bad mommie!).

i am soooo thankful to all of you on here. i hope i don't have to come back but if there's anything i can do to repay y'all, let me know. i am going to make a donation now.

thank you!!!!
jackie and petie

It may not have been the cantalope. Keep monitoring.

If he stays constipated for too long, he may need an enema. Check with the vet on that first.

well - he went 2.5 days without a poohing and then he poohed a lot. and then a little the next day, and then nothing today. i gave him more pumpkin but nothing again.

and yes - i plan on monitoring him a few times a week until i am sure we are through all of this.

Go for consistant small interventions. Push too much through, and you could cause worse problems if he is blocked in some way.

Ok - how is giving him a little pumpkin every other day? We had a small pooh last night and I gave him a little pumpkin in the morning.

Probably OK to do a teaspoon a day; if this is a new problem for him, talk to the vet.

If you read the Feline Constipation website, you'll discover it is possible to be partially blocked and move some stuff through around it, plus there are medical problems which may cause constipation or result from it.

He is doing great! Did I give you this?

Tips to stay OTJ

We say a cat is in remission if the cat can maintain BG levels for 14 days between 40-120 with most of that spent under 100. However, please keep in mind that once a diabetic always a diabetic.

1. Never feed dry - not even treats. If you change wet food types, be 100% sure the new food is also low carb and same low carb % as your current food. Some cats are very carb sensitive and an increase from 3-6% to 8-10% can spike the BG’s. Don’t feed if you aren’t sure!
2. Weigh every 2 weeks to 1 month to watch for weight changes. Too much of a weight gain can cause loss of remission.
3. Measure blood once a week, indefinitely. You want to catch a relapse quickly.
4. No steroids or oral meds with sugar - remind your vet whenever giving you any medication. Always double check.
5. Monitor food intake, peeing and drinking. If increasing, a sign of losing remission.
6. Regular vet checks for infection such as dental , ear or UTI. And get them treated quick!

If he does fall out of remission you need to be more aggressive and resolve issues/ back on insulin as soon as possible as the window for a second remission is tight if any.
