Pet Sitter Refusing to Service Cali

Hi There,

After this past weekend of Cali being uncoorperative with the pet sitter giving her her insulin shots, they have refused to try to do so again in the future. We had a hard enough time finding someone who would do this for us in the first place and we know that no matter who it is, if it isn't my husband or I, Cali won't cooperate.

I don't know what to do now. We are going away for Christmas and cannot take her with us. We can have them give her food, but not shots. That would mean she would go 3-4 days without her insulin. Boarding her is also not an option--she doesn't do well in situations like that and would be so stressed her numbers would be off the charts.

Any suggestions or words of encouragement in this situation???
 
Ask if they'll come to the house to do it? We can ask around but my fear is that they won't be available to do so during Christmas, not to mention, I fear they will have the same fate and not be able to give her her shot anyway....
 
Let's say worst case senario they can't do it either--which I think is VERY real---what could our options be?
 
Pretty sure you mentioned in another thread, but where do you guys live?

Then the best thing would be to find another FDMB member who lives close by who would be willing to test and shoot your kitty while you are away. I know several members live in CT. Let me contact one, who maybe able to help directly, or has a nearby friend who can. Sound good?

Although, I can't stress enough that I don't think Cali will let anyone give her a shot. She will hide, hiss, scratch and growl at you. IF you can get her, she will be VERY unhappy and has even "soiled" herself.

I think it I worth a try, but at the same time, I want to be realistic about the situation. I know everyone keeps saying that it is easy to get a cat their shot, but I'm not kidding when I am saying she is uncooperative with others...pretty much the worst case senario.

I'm close enough but only for once a day visits since I work full time and have to give my own cat insulin and take care of Lilly Grace.

But I'm wondering if there is something I could do to help before that. Sometimes the needles are too big, the lancets are too large, there could be a few things we can change to help this kitty get her shots from her beans.
 
No, not feral. She is all cuddles and purrs when it is me or, especially, my husband (she's his baby). We adopted her 5 years ago and shes always been that way. Shes skiddish around new people, but eventually comes out and hangs on the couch or in the living room on the floor. She doesn't especially loved to be picked up but she let us do it.

That makes this all harder. She cuddles up with us on the couch and looks like the sweetest cat, but gives us SO much trouble :( We've never had a problem giving her shots. She doesn't love her tests but it is a two person job and we are getting better at it. I don't see someone else doing that but more power to you! Sounds like she takes a VERY long time to warm up to people...
 
I can come by over a weekend and meet you and her and we can see how I do :) About a month ago I had to go test 35 cats who were pulled from a hoarding situation, they were being housed in a cold warehouse location and I was able to test them all, there were a few that were too feral and others that didn't have any signs of FD so I didn't test that group, but out of the ones I wanted to test, I got them all. Sometimes a cat can surprise us.

Of course one of my own adopted FDs gave me such a hard time testing I had to skip testing her for a few weeks, so I can promise you, I'm not perfect, but I'm willing to try.

If you want to meet ahead of time, let me know. I have to feed my kitties now and finish up the night time duties so I won't be back on line until tomorrow, but feel free to PM me if you'd like me to meet your kitty.

I've done lots of pet sitting for diabetic cats, both in their homes and in mine. I can think of at least 3 that were holy terrors---but I still managed to get their shots in. You just need a sitter who is determined to get the job done.

You also have to limit the spaces she can get into and eliminate as many potential hiding spaces as possible to make the job easier for the sitter.

Just wanted to say live help is WONDERFUL. I had a situation with my Civvie Slappy where she just stopped eating....long story short, Patricia from the board came over and with her and her dh, they showed me how to burrito, and dropper feed Slappy. I strongly believe that without their training, hands on, I would have never been able to do this on my own.
Hands on help and your baby getting to know Tuckers mom before you actually go away might allow you to enjoy your Christmas vacation.
