Hi All,

I picked up a box of CVS Original Strength Acid Controller...since they didn't have Pepcid AC. The active ingredient in both is Famotidine USP, 10 mg. The differences in the inactive ingredients concern me. Has anyone used the CVS generic?

Pepcid AC inactive ingredients from their website:
Hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, red iron oxide, starch, talc, titanium dioxide

CVS Acid Controller inactive ingredients (the box says "compare to the active ingredient in Pepcid AC):
Colloidal silicon dioxide, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelantinzed starch, polyethylene glycol, synthetic red iron oxide, talc, titanium dioxide

Also, is one quarter tab, or 2.5 mg, the standard kitty dose...or is it dosed by weight?

Thanks,

Deb

Thanks Larry. It looks like Pepcid AC, or any generic form, won't be the answer. Hopefully, your reply will help others in the future. I was grasping at straws. She had a full work-up about three weeks ago...apparently by an incompetent. Something as simple as Pecid, won't help her at this point. Thanks for your time.

Yes, good to know about the interchangeability of the meds. Deb, what is going on with your sweet girl? I hope it is something that can easily be fixed.

Im sorry there is something else going on with your kitty. My Pickles has been on generic CVS acid control for abour 6 months. No more spitting up bile. Newly diagnosed two weeks ago and is getting 1 unit in the morning. Jacqui P.S. I use a pill cutter and give her one fourth of the tablet.

Well, it wasn't my "sweet" girl, as in FD Marilyn, but it was my sweet civvie Mini...who was extra "sweet"...even without the FD status. She was such a sweet girl; the last of four Calicos. She is gone...and I haven't been able to mourn our 14 years together due to "vet stress". Sometimes, our kitties aren't the only ones subjected to vet stress...but in this case of human vet stress...it was intentional. For that reason, I can barely speak....

But this information is still good to know...and I now have the CVS brand here...which could come in handy.

HI Deb, the OTC med to NOT give is Pepcid Complete (or the generic version). This formulation has other ingredients in it not suitable for cats. Yes a standard dose is a 1/4 of a tablet of 10mg famotadine. If that doesn't help you can ask your vet for a compounded prescription of prilosec. It is MUCH more expensive though so I would only go with it if the pepcid doesnt work. Jan
