Peeing outside the litter box?

I went to get into the shower tonight and stepped in a big pile of urine.

Mogee has never done this before. His litter is scooped twice, sometimes three times a day. His urine input/output has seemed to go back to normal since the switch to wet food a month ago. His numbers seems fine too.

The urine looked light yellow and didn't really smell.

Any advice is appreciated.

Silver did that too when first diagnosed. Must be connected to the diabetes somehow. He never did it when it remission and once since our of remission. Nothing much you can do except put puppy pads in usual places. Silver will often for some weird reason of his own, poop outside the box right beside it. But thankfully on the pad I put there for that purpose.

Mogee has been on insulin now for over 2 months. I don't understand why he would just now start all of a sudden. And I know he has used the litter box today to pee and poop. Why would he all of a sudden go on the bathroom floor?

He is acting completely normal. Should I make a vet appointment for this?

I wouldn’t for one time. Sometimes cats are just assholes. If he does it again I would, just to rule out uti.

Could he have seen a stray outside?

I doubt it. We live on the 3rd floor of an apartment. Could a squirrel cause this? We have had a squirrel that has been coming on the balcony and trying to drink out of Mogee's water bowl we keep outside. I have seen him everyday this past week? The bathroom where he peed is not anywhere near the door he sees the squirrel through though.

He didn't pee anywhere last night, that I know of. And I know he used the litter box twice for pee since then. Just very weird. Has never happened before. When I stepped in it, I instantly thought he may be sick since he's never done that but he is acting completely normal. If it happens again, I will most likely get him checked out.

His numbers haven't been the greatest lately, but not horrible. Do UTIs cause the bg to be higher?

Yes any infection could cause numbers to go up.

Okay. Thank you.

I am now thinking that is why his numbers haven't been anywhere near as low as they were when we first switched to the Fancy Feast. 3 units was making him go to the green, now we are not anywhere close.

Would you recommend taking him regardless of if he does it again or not? (Home on break now and he has not used the litter box since I scooped this morning, no pee on floor anywhere). Appreciate the help!

If you want to be sure then it certainly can’t hurt to take him.

If you do take Mogee to the vet, get a urine sample to take with you. The fresher the better.

You could also call the vet and ask if they will submit the urine sample without seeing Mogee; with the agreement that if something comes back on the sample that you will bring him in for an appointment. Tell them that you suspect a UTI/bladder infection. If I remember correctly, he doesn’t travel well, right?

Monster will pee in the bathtub or in the laundry room when he is having urinary issues. I appreciate when he chooses the bathtub!

Yes, he hates the vet and car! Most likely going to take him this weekend. He has used the litter box today and hasn't peed anywhere other than there. But obviously him peeing on the floor for the first time in 6 and a half years, he's trying to tell me something. Thanks for the advice. Hopefully everything goes well. Hoping maybe this is why his numbers have been higher.

What is the best way to get a urine sample from him? What has worked for you?

There are two test for UTI and the most accurate one (sorry I can't remember what it's called) requires them to extract the urine from the cat, so he would need to go into the office (unless you have a mobile vet?). If you want to get a urine sample at home though, you need a container (with a lid so you can transport). You have to stalk him and when he goes to the litter box, you follow him in, stick the container under his bum, and collect the sample. Some cats will let you, some not so much. I thought mine would never ever let me do that, but turns out he just gave me a funny look and lifted his bum to make it easier for me. Cats can surprise you sometimes. Though again, that isn't going to be as helpful as the test where they grow the culture and match the antibiotic to the type of infection (if there is one).

Thanks for the advice everyone. Mogee has been going in the litter box as normal since the one occurrence the other night.

It still really baffles me.. he has been acting completely normal too. Really weird.

I plan on taking him to get checked regardless sometime within the next couple days. I am going to try and catch some urine beforehand as some have suggested.
