he had dental today but is still under the weather. He is not interested in eating. He had no insulin this morning. His preop bg was around 300. It is too late for us to give insulin tonight, we would both be at work 12 hours from now.
He was given convenia injectable antibiotic, and Injectable buprenex and metacam.
I will test him before I go to bed. I only have u100 syringes but at least they have half u it markings...he is only to get .5units.
I may get back on here in a panic if he is really high after I test him.
Ill get a spreadsheet up as soon as I can....feel like I brought the baby home without being ready nailbite_smile

nobody's ever ready to bring the baby home, jennifer, you'll do fine. holler at us if we can help you! remember him being high for a little while isn't a crisis. he'll be ok.

Can't believe I'm here. Well peak seems to be a sweetheart..he finally ate but he HATES me trying to home test him. Tried twice..first time he growled before I even tried the lancet...hour later when I tried the lancet he got quite mad and growled...I held on and tried to get blood but couldn't get enough. I didn't warm him....was trying to sneak it on him. He's pissed now....so I'll be leaving him for the night.
Illl start with the bup only tomorrow. At least he ate well..although he is on dm dry and wet..he also ate 1/2 can of low carb FF.
He is an emergency save fro. Euthanasia by my vet patti. All is contingent on sophie not going to pieces with her flud. They won't be meeting for awhile tho....
Wish me luck guys! Don't feel like I should shoot without a bg in the morn....god help me!
 
I thought i would post this as Jen and I go quite abit back when we both had acro kitties and both of us were used to using a fair amount of Metacam before. It was always controversial. Altho numerous kitties have tolerated it - it is now NOT recommended as a first line pain relief med. Mainly because there have been kitties that have developed renal failure from it. It's most often used now for palliative care - kitties with cancer - or even for our acro cats where no other pain meds work. If you read the cancer boards - it is used frequently there to help them. The main thing is to follow their renal function tests. Again it's one of those ECID responses with this med. Merlin used it for 2 years and had normal renal function tests till the very end.

I am not endorsing using this just trying to show another side and for Jen - she's been away for a little bit - just trying to explain why it's not being used so much now.

There is a blog about this med by Lynette and MeowMeow who used to post ALOT here on fdmb - and was very knowledgeable about many different facets of cat care. A lot of great discussion about this med. I think the one thing about any med is that all of them have side effects. Any of them can cause renal or liver or heart damage.

BREATHE! RELAX! Peake is probably telling you he has had enough for one day. Hopefully he will be more cooperative in the morning for testing. It's wonderful you are giving him a chance. Hope it all works out.
 
Thanks Patti. In addition to the blog you mentioned, one of our members who's kitty, Latte (GA) suffered from acute renal failure from Metacam. In the link that I posted above, you can find Latte's story. I do think there are better alternatives to Metacam -- especially for an otherwise healthy cat. We do try to make sure that people have all of the information possible so they can make an informed decision or better yet, inform their vet!

Congratulations on the new addition! I'm sure he'll bounce back from the dental quickly and thrive under your care.
