Hello, been a while since I've posted (Tonka is still doing well being diet-controlled and up to his usual trouble - which is impressive for a 16 year old diabetic cat). But I wanted to pass on a recipe change that I've noticed and found rather alarming:

The PC Extra Meaty foods have been my go to for Tonka the last several years (mostly Turkey and Giblets, and Beef and Salmon, in the large cans). My mother bought a box of the smaller (85 g) cans while she was cat sitting and he was very happy with them. The Canadian food chart shows that the ingredients were different for different sizes of cans for the same "flavour" of food in their line, but indicated that the 85 g cans in the flavours he was eating were still fine (well under 10% carb).

BUT, I noticed that his sugars were creeping up a bit when I tested him, so I checked the ingredients. The ingredients in our 374 g (large) cans was the same listed in the old food chart, so they should be fine. However, when I checked the small cans, they had changed. And the craziest, most disturbing thing? It lists DEXTROSE as an ingredient - for each flavour in the box (Turkey and Gibs, Beef, and Chicken and Liver). And not one of the last ingredients, but before all the usual additives that come after the meats. Huh??? In what universe do cats need sugar added to their food? So disappointed in that.
That'll teach me to not check the ingredient lists regularly. Just happy that the large cans are still the same.

The guaranteed analysis on the Turkey and Giblets 85 g can still adds up to 98.5% between protein, fat, moisture, fibre and ash, so in theory, it should still be low in carb, but just the fact that they are adding dextrose (along with the other various additives) is worrisome. Especially since the guaranteed analysis lists a lot of maximums, so they could be lower
