Never take kids to the vets if you want to concentrate on the cat ohmygod_smile She is fine, well better than fine, our vet, who is an internist, thinks she looks great for a diabetic cat ohmygod_smile Anyhow, she just didn't look right to me this AM, so I needed supplies .... off we go, plus her ketones are really high!

Blood work, an ultasound (which we all watch, very cool!) and an exam, everything very good. No pancreatitis, heart looks good and she's gained a pound! She was being her Payne self, had her kids and wanted to leave! Vet feels .... she is a rare cat, (no ****) and her body regularly throws off ketones and then they cycle down again, which we have found to be true. Fighting them only makes things worse .... maybe.

So, I agree fighting them is fruitless and only puts her into rebound, where she is now. I am now going to take the conservative approach and open a bottle of Sonoma Wine (got you there! :) and chill. Sending good vibes to Barbara, oh I see where Barbara's back, sorry a good vet is priceless, glad your back.

Re: Payne is hope .... I'm going to kill the kids!

I posted this over on Kim's thread in response to you taking Payne in. So glad she is ok! Maybe you saw it...but according to this guy Payne can't have ketones cause she's in the 100's!

This ketone stuff with these low numbers is amazing, not in a good way. Well, you both have unusual kitties (though we all knew they were amazing and unusual.)

Nancy, didn't you have a time when the kids gave Payne something really forbidden and it caused problems? I thought that was what your title meant!

Sardines and egg salad .... :) they were just into everything at the vets, of course that is how we got to go help with the ultrasound. Yes, we have very unusual kitties, I always knew this about Payne ..... she was mine from day 1, literally. I had 11 kits and I always loved her and she was an UGLY kit! but she was always mine!! Sorry about the subject line (these kids live in FEAR of giving her anything!!) I am still better than Kim ohmygod_smile no candles in my subject line (three days!!) I am still laughing, being nicely told off by Sue!

Poor Kim, what the heck was she doing?

Sardines & egg salad..what a combo! How old are your kids? You make me laugh...keep it up!

Come to think of it Thumper gave us trouble also...she had a nasty eye infection & they wouldn't open for awhile!

This is probably way too simple. Is there any chance that Thumper is reacting to the hot weather and just feeling hot and tired?

I don't think so...she stays in the house all the time with the A/C on and believe me I keep it cool in here! She used to like to go lay on the patio...she hardly does that anymore.

Glad the test results were good for Payne. Unique kitties are the best even though they keep us on our toes.

So VERY happy that Payne is doing well!!
It seems that everyone is slowly getting a little better
Hopefully things will be back to normal soon
and we will not have to do this again until next month!

Hang in ther eveyone and enjoy some wine tonight!
We all deserve it

So glad that Payne is ok.

My only suggestion would be "don't kill the kids" because when they grow up they give you "GRANDKIDS" and that makes all this stuff now soooooo worth it. :-D

Yay I'm glad Payne is doing so well. She sounds like a challenge with her ketone situation.

We have seen a number of kitties who get ketones in lower #s. I don't understand it, but it's definitely possible. My understanding is ketones are from a lack of insulin rather than higher #s per se. It's hard to get your mind around really.

What is really confusing with ketones is you can be showing no/trace with urine strips and 4 or 5 on the meter, ketones make no sense. The problem with with lots of ketones is you can't play around with your insulin looking for the sweet spot .... you need to keep enough in them to not start on the DKA road because you already have one of the elements. (ketones) I wonder if there is anyone/anywhere doing research on high ketones in diabetic cats ohmygod_smile dream on! Nancy
