I was going to put this in Kim's thread but I still don't know what else she's been called worse than crazy, so I'll do my own .....

CP is somewhat new for me, so I am a little slower in picking up the signs than I am with ketones and DKA. But a couple of days ago Payne started sitting like a meatloaf and acting a little off but no ketones. I have been having trouble with her #'s for a week or so. Yesterday I checked her ketones and they were off the wall! I immediately gave her 150 ml SQ fluids and started giving her R every hour. (DO NOT DUPLICATE!!) Payne never goes low and as long as I watch nadirs, I'm ok ..... but I know her nadirs really well. I also gave her some bupe. By late yesterday the ketones were gone ....

I would assume that from the beginning she has had pancreatitis but this is the first time I have seen, what I presume to be a attack, lead to ketones and higher #'s ..... although it has probably always been this way. I think the CP can affect so much. What I should have done and will do in the future is raise her pzi way up when I feel this coming on, then I may not need to resort to using R.

In the past I would not have caught the signs early enough, not given pain meds. or extra SQ or extra pzi,
then by the time I caught it .... it would need vet intervention. Today she has no ketones and seemingly, no pain but the #'s are taking longer which I am hitting with more pzi.

I have had some wonderful guides on this board .... I will be forever grateful! Oh thanks Barbara for getting on board! but I think we need to wait for the vet to agree :)

I am so glad Payne is okay! You do take wonderful care of her.

You are so welcome for the advice and I am glad to know you are forever grateful...don't mention it...my pleasure!

We really need a subforum for pancreatitis - so many diabetics have it! And it complicates the picture so much.....Glad you caught it early.

Bless your heart, Nancy! Meatloafing is a definite sign for some cats. Shaikha doesn't get ketones (thank God!) but she definitely spikes her glucose when attacks come. It sounds like you have learned some valuable new information for Payne in terms of what might be triggering ketones for her. With CP, you really need to learn to read the signs, and ECID for sure! I hope that Payne continues to do well and that the ketones are gone! Has her appetite been okay? Shaikha's and my GA Tabriz always had a dropoff in appetite when theirs flared. Shaikha if she gets it bad will sit sort of hunched over like she's protecting her tummy, but Tabriz would lie down very slowly and cautiously like it really hurt him, poor guy. Bupe always fixed that but of course they also got extra fluids. In Tabriz's case since he had renal failure his renal values would also rise some during an attack, which also confirmed what was going on. We'd counter with more fluids which helped. I hate pancreatitis! It is such a nasty condition for a cat to have.

I like Sue's idea about a sub-forum for pancreatitis .... I was told when Payne was first Dx. and went into DKA that she probably had CP or IBD. Unfortunately for CP you need to be in the <danger zone> when you have the test ..... Payne was negative twice. But I have heard stats that say 1 in 3 cats have. (diabetic)

The scary part is .... if I had treated her for CP earlier, would that have stopped the DKA's?? I think there should be a sub-forum where you could go if you have certain symptoms, except for health. In the beginning health can be intimidating, I was lucky I had some great guides (you were not on Kim, so stop) that kept after me with PMs and lots and lots of help.

I'm glad your going back to t.i.d. Wendy because you are grumpy when her #'s are bad, good moods all around! but I'm glad this works, would you like to talk to Kim who obviously thinks I'm???

We are leaving for a few days this Sunday, small trip to the lovely towns above San Francisco along the Russian River. We are staying in a little town called Healdsburg, one of the prettiest towns I have ever seen! Staying at a nice Inn that will take a diabetic kitty. It is a real agriculture area so we are bringing back a lot of apples and cherries, fresh bread and eggs ..... thanks Barbara.

Thanks to everyone for your support ..... oh, I forgot and the wine!! Oh 1 more! I am getting my 1st. tattoo!

Glad you are able to get away for a while. It sounds like a nice place!

I think you should get a tattoo that says:

My name is Nancy & I'm a Feline Diabetic Cataholic!!! haha_smiley haha_smiley

I actually like it, I'll get it on the other arm!

I am having a picture of our 36 yr. old Amazon that died suddenly last October. I miss her more than anything! she and Payne ran the house .... she was the most amazing bird .... she said "Hi!" when we came home, "Bye!" when we left. She had five cages all around the house/outside and never went in any of them. But she was just interesting and loving and I miss her every day ..... I am going to have my family's names put in the feathers. (It's because they moaned and cabitched!)

I'm curious about this sitting like a meatloaf. My Alex always sat that way and since diagnosed with diabetes rarely sits that way.

OH Nancy I am sorry Payne has been having a tough time! That is great that you caught it and could help her out (yay for having Bupe on hand!). That's a really good idea to have some collective wisdom on recognizing and treating P attacks quickly. If their insulin needs change dramatically and you have the data to know what to do, that is a big help.

I am so glad that you caugh it early and that she is feeling better!
What the heck is meatloafing though, I never heard of that term before...
(but then again there are lot of thinkgs I have ot heard of)

Hope you enjoy your time away! and goodluck with the tatoo..

Sort of like a sphinx position but more hunched in and tucked under. It is a very guarded position. Some cats sleep like that to stay warm, but in Shaikha's case it is like she is drawing into herself when she's hurting:
