Misty is one of my civi's. She is about 17 years old and is quite feral. She was netted by a friend in 1998, spayed and given to me. She has only went to the vet for rabies every three years and she had to be sedated to go to the vet. Up until this Thursday she was doing OK, getting a little thin but eating OK. Thursday morning she at little but ate OK that night. Ate very little Friday and nothing yesterday or this morning. I can now pick here and brought her to the vet this morning. Blood work was OK but showed showed dehydration. I took her home and gave fluids and an appetite stimulant.. Please keep her in my prayers.

Sending prayers. No idea whats going on? Could it be as simple as a fur ball? or pancreatitis? Are you assisted feeding?

Some suggestions on tempting a cat to eat...

Enticing a Cat to Eat

Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
FortiFlora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
parmesean cheese
smashed crumbles of dry food
bonito/tuna flakes (Can be found at Asian markets or sometimes in the Asian food section of a large grocery store.)
halo chicken treats (freeze dried chicken) -- crumble into dust over food -- my Wolfie loves this stuff.
pour a little water from tuna in water over food (I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats and it shouldn't contain soy -- check labels)
powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
trader joe tuna for cats
baby food -- beechnut or Gerber Stage 2 -- you want a baby food that is only a protein + broth (although the Gerber contains cornstarch). It should have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
kentucky fried chicken
deli turkey /chicken
plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
chicken broth -- low sodium

If enticements don't work, you should consider:
-assist feeding ( syringe or make little meatballs and place in mouth)
-and/or talking to your vet about appetite stimulents ( mirtazapine or cyproheptidine)

Hoping Misty comes around quickly after the fluids. Sending good thoughts and prayers for her to feel better soon.

Hi Larry,

How is Misty doing today? She reminds me of how my Ketchie looks right now. Must just be due to 'old age' I suppose. We have to remember these cats of ours at those ages are like 'little old ladies'. Something we don't like to think about though, but we are all getting older.

I will pray for your beautiful Misty and for you too, and hope the fluids perk up her appetite. Plus the appetite stimulant.

Does she have signs of CRF? Also, my vets have said that if older cats get microscopic intestinal cancer, that it won't show up on blood work. I have lost several of my cats to that. :(

Hang in there! You are a great animal lover, and you have given lots of good advice over the years here on this board.

Please keep us posted on how she is doing. I know what you are going through.

Hugs,

Oh, damn, Larry. I am so sorry to read this. Tonight my prayers will be for you. Misty was an absolutely beautiful girl and I hope she visits your dreams soon.

Fly free little girl,

Carl

I'm so sorry, Larry. Her picture made me catch my breath a bit - she looks so much like my Nika.

She had a wonderful life, full of love ... but it's never, ever long enough, is it? My heart aches for your loss.

Safe journey and soft landing, little Misty.

My heartfelt sympathy on the loss of Misty......she was beautiful. So hard when you have ferals living with you that are quite content and happy but when they need help sometimes there isn't much one can do to help. She had a long life, much longer than she would have if she hadn't been caught and you hadn't given her a home. I'm so sorry it was time for her to leave.

Dear Larry,

Sending lots of prayers for you in your loss of Misty. She was very blessed to have you for her bean dad, and I know how much you are hurting because she has crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge.

She had a good, long life, with you, and you were both blessed to have each other. Many condolences to you, Larry. She was a beautiful furbaby.

I am so sorry she had to leave you. What a pretty kitty. Glad she was able to stay with you so long. 17 is a long time for a feral kitty.
My sympathies. wings_cat
