She was a happy camper yesterday and she still acts like she is starving all the time though so I have taken to giving them each a 1/3 can of cat food with lots of water at the half-way mark.

Over at Cat Info, Dr Pierson has info on maintenance calories needed. we find that unregulated diabetics may need about 50% more food than is normally expected, due to the inability to use all the calories.

ah ok ..I feed her a can and two 1/3 of a can snacks a day so maybe up the snacks at the halfway point to a half a can so she is getting 2 cans a day? She is rather skinny from her dka episode and I had been wanting to feed her more just thought I couldn't cause of her glucose.

For me, I find that about 1 oz per pound, divided into 2 meals, works for my civvies. Then you tweak for the desired weight - increase to gain, decrease to lose. I'm feeding 15, so I can't be terribly precise!

An 8 lb cat with diabetes, might get 8 oz, plus 4 oz (50% more), divided as half across each of the AM and PM periods.
An 10 lb cat with diabetes, might get 10 oz, plus 5 oz (50% more), divided as half across each of the AM and PM periods.

Right now she is only almost 6 lbs because of the dka but she does seem to have a bigger belly. I am assuming that within the next couple of months she will fill out the rest of her body as she gains weight.

I was giving her too little then cause they were only getting a 5.5 Oz can each a day broken up in 2 feedings.
