How to Handle a Hypo

What level is he now? You need to test every 30 minutes if he's dropping quickly or below 50 mg/dL on a human meter or 68 mg/dL on a pet meter.

You can feed a couple teaspoons of high carb food to slow the drop.

Sorry dozed off Panther woke me up for his shot on time (hard to belive but he knows when it's time) he's back up 137 at 3am shot time thank you sorry I panicked

Just glad to hear you're doing okay. I might be wrong, but I think the GA prefix you're using in your title heading means "Guardian Angel," which is for kitties who have just passed. You may want to change that since you had a much better outcome. :)

He was in a curve last night the numbers looked good too 137 at. Shot time then he dropped went back up to 46 checking every 30 mins

Can we get you started using our grid to record your glucose tests? It will help us give you better feedback. Instructions are here.

Understanding the spreadsheet/grid:

The colored headings at the top are the ranges of glucose values. They are color-coded to clue you in as to meaning.

Each day is 1 row. Each column stores different data for the day.

From left to right, you enter
the Date in the first column
the AMPS (morning pre-shot test) in the 2nd column
the Units given (turquoise column)

Then, there are 11 columns labeled +1 through +11
If you test at +5 (5 hours after the shot), you enter the test number in the +5 column
If you test at +7 (7 hours after the shot), you enter the test number in the +7 column
and so on.

Halfway across the page is the column for PMPS (evening pre-shot)
To the right is another turquoise column for Units given at the evening shot.

There is second set of columns labeled +1 through +11
If you snag a before bed test at +3, you enter the test number in the +3 column.

We separate day and night numbers like that because many cats go lower at night.

It is merely a grid for storing the info; no math required.

Do you have syringes with half unit markings? He has earned a dose reduction by going below 50 mg/dL.
If he is below 150 mg/dL at shot time, stall 30 minutes without feeding and re-test him.

Given that you're using Lantus and after feeding an entire can of high carb this last cycle, I'd be inclined to drop down to 0.5 units once he is shootable, to allow the depot to drain. The depot is a buildup of crystals of Lantus under the skin; some is still present at the time of the next shot.

Terrific!
Now, he may bounce a bit from going pretty low (ie the numbers may go up some), plus the 0.5 is intended to help the depot drain, so just stick with that 0.5 dose for about 2-3 days minimum, to let him get really stable and then re-evaluate from there with the help of the Lantus users. He may need 0.75 units or he may be trying to get off the insulin.

With testing down and spreadsheet up, you are ready to start posting in the Lantus/Levemir forum. There are a bunch of sticky posts (they stay 'stuck' at the top of the posts) that will help you learn how to work with Lantus optimally.
