My cat Kitty was dx with chronic pancreatitis yesterday. Her bg has been hard to control and rising daily. All other lab work came back okay, including liver values.

I am already giving 100 mls sub q every other day-- due to ketone issues and to support her kidneys. Her kidney values are not bad--CRT. 1.9 and BUN 51.

So, I am on my way to the vet to get her new regiment for the pancreatitis--I know she is in pain and the vet is going to give bupe. She is not vomiting or showing symptoms other than not feeling well and being in some pain. Her appetite is good and she is eating great. I know pred is needed sometimes--but, I am not sure if we are there yet.

Her test result of the flpl was 13.4---with anything above 5.4 positive.

I have read JoJo and Bunny's thread concerning Pancreatitis.

What else should I be looking for in a treatment regiment. My vet is easy to work with, but sometimes I have to be prepared to help with the protocals.

Truly I don't know a lot about his and am looking help!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Kim

Both of my cats have pancreatitis issues, but Shadoe is worse and frequent.
Three things: Pepcid, fluids, and pain meds.

I give Shadoe 1/4tab Pepcid AC regular strength BID. No more than 5mg per day for cats. Quite often it's enough to ease things, but if still 'off' and not eating well, she gets bupe and fluids if her BG are not too low because fluids they can cause BG to lower.
Her last confirmed result from fPLI was 13 or 15; that's her usual range when tested, but seems back to normal after about 3 days of pepcid/bupe/SQ.

You can learn to do the fluids Gayle mentioned at home. With a BUN of 51 indicating dehydration, please ask the vet about doing that. It really does help them. Otherwise, if she's still eating OK, she's not doing too badly. Some cats stop eating altogether.

Thanks to all...I am presently giving 100 mls sub q at home every other day due to ketone issues and elevated kidney values. I will be increasing to every day and changing her diet to lower fat. She is eating good--the vet has recommended to continue the bupe and increase the fluids only at this point and to retest in 4 weeks.

She mentioned Budesonine (steroid), but advised against starting it now.

To those of you that have dealt with this---would you add the pepcid to the regiment if no foaming or vomiting is present? Is there something to be gained there?

Does my vet's protocal sound reasonable to you?

Thanks for the help!

Kim

I give 1/4tab of 10mg pepcid BID almost as a preventative thing for Shadoe and it helps her a great deal.

ETA: I have found she has less extreme issues since giving pepcid every day

Thanks Gayle--I think I will include the pepcid in her treatment.

I have researched diet changes--do you feed raw? I have looked and Janet and Binkey's chart and am looking reasonable choices. I can't stand the thought of adding food with 10 carbs, though I realize I might have too.

Thanks for your help!

Kim
