My Scout was hospitalized today with acute pancreatitis (fPL is 41) and his diabetes has returned (upper 480’s).
I am KICKING MYSELF for changing his diet, as he was on a limited ingredient diet (Royal Canin venison) + daily Cerenia for 5 years - that put his pancreatitis & diabetes into remission. My mistake was that I slowly moved him to Hill’s k/d beginning in January as the vet raised a concern about early renal insufficiency in December, recommending a switch to a low protein, low phosphorus diet. At the time I was worried about how that would affect his pancreas - I’m regretting that switch, he’s in so much pain now, pancreas is “big and significantly inflamed”.
The vet is considering a feeding tube as he’s not eating. I understand that getting him to eat is most important, so they will probably feed Hill’s a/d or something similar initially to get him back eating. I am hoping and praying he can come through this.
For those of you having experience in this, how did you transition kitty back on a novel protein/limited ingredient diet? (to limit the chance of future problems w/pancreatitis.)
I see Hill’s has d/d with 17% carb: also Merrick and KOHA have limited ingredient recipes, are these worth considering?
Sorry for the long post, thank you for reading.
