?!?! pancreatitis diet

My Scout was hospitalized today with acute pancreatitis (fPL is 41) and his diabetes has returned (upper 480’s).

I am KICKING MYSELF for changing his diet, as he was on a limited ingredient diet (Royal Canin venison) + daily Cerenia for 5 years - that put his pancreatitis & diabetes into remission. My mistake was that I slowly moved him to Hill’s k/d beginning in January as the vet raised a concern about early renal insufficiency in December, recommending a switch to a low protein, low phosphorus diet. At the time I was worried about how that would affect his pancreas - I’m regretting that switch, he’s in so much pain now, pancreas is “big and significantly inflamed”.

The vet is considering a feeding tube as he’s not eating. I understand that getting him to eat is most important, so they will probably feed Hill’s a/d or something similar initially to get him back eating. I am hoping and praying he can come through this.

For those of you having experience in this, how did you transition kitty back on a novel protein/limited ingredient diet? (to limit the chance of future problems w/pancreatitis.)

I see Hill’s has d/d with 17% carb: also Merrick and KOHA have limited ingredient recipes, are these worth considering?
Sorry for the long post, thank you for reading.

That damned k/d food has a lot of unwarranted health issues to answer for. I do wish vets would get off that wagon. It is what spoiled my Ty's otherwise good health.

I cannot give you an answer to a diet right now as I am trying assorted foods for the same types of reasons. Hopefully others will come along soon to help.

I just wanted to send you a :bighug: , say Hi and Welcome.

Hello - Sorry you’re kit is sick & I hope he heals quickly! Do vets even have low carb foods? My vet tried that & I asked them to look at the carb content compared to FF & friskies. Yes indeed they said, that is lower & case closed!
Shame on them trying to sell an inappropriate food for our pets!

Sorry your kitty isn’t feeling well. You should transition him to a low carb, limited ingredient, novel protein slowly, like you did when going to the k/d. Unfortunately there are very few of those out there! What was the carb content of the RC food you were feeding previously? If it put him in remission, can you go back to it?

The carb content on the RC
selected protein venison is 24%.
He went into remission for 5 years while on it.
RC also offers 2 other selected protein recipes: rabbit that is 15% and duck, which is 16%.
Should I be aiming for any of these lower
carb %’s ?
I will happily put him back on it if I can get him to eat it once he’s out of the hospital!

Lower carb(under 10 carbs) for the diabetes and lower phosphorus (under 200 on Dr Lisa’s chart) for the kidneys, then add to that a novel protein if you think that will help his pancreatitis (be sure to read labels, some that are novel proteins also contain other proteins). That will be hard to find! Have you considered making your own food? Several here do that and swear by it.

It is hard to find!
I’m not able to go the homemade route, so far I’ve been able to use Dr. Lisa’s chart to
find 3 types that are limited ingredient with phosphorus less than 200 and carbs 15/16%.

I spoke w/the vet this a.m. and his BG #’s are down, and they were able to get him eating canned Hill’s a/d. They’re going to reduce the amount of tube feeding gradually so he eats better independently. I see him this afternoon, so I’m hoping things are looking brighter.

It is hard to find!

It is . It is incredibly difficult to transition to a food that is the right balance.
As you can see from my spreadsheet - the link is in my signature - Tyler had a verybad bout of pancreatitis not so long ago and since then it has been difficult to find or add food that works for him on all fronts.
Yes. The food needs to be low phos - under 200 .
The carbs should be low however this may not be possible given the other issues, so it could be the carbs will be higher and the insulin dose adjusted accordingly.

I am having problems getting Tyler back to a diet which addresses the issues of diabetes/CKD and pancreatitis without that causing irritation and so, loose stools.

@Marje and Gracie is a treasure and guru. She may be able to give you some pointers & thoughts.

and have one of these. :bighug:

I hope the vet get Scout more on an even keel and yo get to bring home home soon.

There is no evidence that diet causes pancreatitis in cats like it does in dogs. Pancreatitis is typically idiopathic in cats but things like trauma to the pancreas, parasites, IBD “can” cause it. I seriously doubt it was the diet change.

The diet change is more likely to have affected his BG.

I’m not a fan of the prescription diets due to the poor ingredients but I have seen the renal diets help very sick CKD cats and help get the phosphorus levels down. The carbs are too high and the protein too low unless the kitty is in end stage renal disease.

I hope your sweet boy gets better fast and gets back into remission.
