The start of the topic.

Short version-
My cat Sneakers has Acromelegy and I am thinking she is in pain- brain tumor- headaches- not feeling good kind of go hand in hand.

She has been regulated for over a month now dancing_cat but has not returned to her old, cuddling and purring ways- hence I think she is in pain.

My vet wanted to give her metacam- I refused as it is linked to ARF in cats- something he didn't know anything about. He looked up getting bupe for me but said it would be $600 for a 2 1/2 month supply.

I am asking- is that reasonable? Are there other medications out there that i can use?

Thanks.

answered on FB - Norton got Prednosolone as an anti-inflammatory -- his brain tumor was big enough to cause him to walk in circles. The Pred reduced swelling and he felt better -- more interactive / communicative and able to walk straighter to where he was going. We watched his BGs carefully expecting to need to increase dose, and his BGs were steady -- no need to increase his insulin for Pred.

I'd check at Walmart or Costco pharmacies as this is a human medicine and they are usually cheaper than getting it at the vet. Your vet can just write a prescription that they can fill

When Tigger was alive and being treated for diabetes he was on Buprenex for spondolosis and arthritis. I was able to have it compounded into a flavored liquid. It was fairly inexpensive too, I think around $30-40 with shipping included. The pharmacy I used was in Minnesota, I believe it was called Soderlund Drug. he did very well on it, and it was easy to give. Buprenex is expensive when buying the injectable, but for some reason having it compounded is cheaper. I do the ordering for our animal shelter and for us to buy 5ml's of Buprenex it's $117.00!!!

I'm shocked that your vet didn't know about Metacam in cats! That's scary nailbite_smile

Hope your kitty finds some relief

Thanks. Running these through 1800petmeds.com to see if I can order-

Tramadol- unable to as it is a controlled substance for my state
Gabapentin- able to- need prescription
prednosolone- able to, need prescription

And the two options I have it looks to be less than $300/month.

Just be careful with tramadol as it can negatively affect behavior.

After a dental, I gave it to my civvie, and she went nuts (literally) for 6 hours - she couldn't lay down, wouldn't stop pacing, had a crazed look in her eyes, wouldn't eat, drink, just up down, pace pace pace. And this was just one dose.

I can order the gaba and pred by the pill. I might just order a small amount and watch for side effects before ordering more.

I'll drop the information off to my vet so he can look it over and give me a prescription for it.

You can ask your vet for the prescription and then get it anywhere, like online and in Candaian pharmacies. The vets mark up all the drugs outrageously, never get regular drugs that you will need for an extended period from your vet or they'll bilk you, ditto with things like kidney fluids
