I just got woken up by Ozzie throwing up a little bile - no vomit but mild yellowish bile. He is starving, jumping up on counter and showing signs like he was before he was dx diabetes and the first attack of DKA right his incorrect dosage given of 1 unit by his first vet. When he came home a year ago from his DKA he was on 3 units - after a BG in the clinic he was put up to a skinny 3.50 and for one whole year not one problem.
Two weeks ago when he was showing the same signs like he is now and now we know it is a mild case of pancreatitis can anyone advise the dose for him. Given his numbers in the hospital where he dipped a few times down to the 30's and 60's I don't think his food intake in there was as well I know it wasn't like it is now. So last night I gave 1 1/2 and the numbers are as folows; -- pls bear w/ me while I get the SS up and running. So much stuff going on - but he is my priority and I need to know if I should go up to 2 units this am and stop the ketones coming back.
Last night 8:30pm 401
12:30 am 322
3:30 am 431
5:30 am 420
i am about to give b'fast and i have souped it up again. please can you advise, I speak to the vet this am before I shoot but I'm leaning towards the 2 units...only b/c of the scare of ketones and his presentation right now.

How long from now, before your shoot?
What is your current dose?
I can't help you with the dose question, as I can't see your ss, and I don't follow every condo, so don't know your day by day history.
Will you be home to monitor him, and do you have plenty of strips and HC if you do decide to increase?

I have to leave in 25 minutes, and am hoping others will be along to help you with your dose question.

FWIW, when J.D.'s tummy is empty, he often throws up a bit of clear fluid in the morning.
With his high BGs, Ozzie may be extra hungry right now. I hope you get this all sorted out. I'm sure your vet will tell you to increase to 2 units, as vets don't normally advise increasing in 1/4 units like we prefer.

Lauren, the real dosing experts will be along but I think that it is not enough insulin. He is most probaby in a bounce but the numbers should drop with the insulin. I do hate it when our babies vomit. For me, I always become nervous. Call the vet 1st thing and let him know what is happening.

Thank you girls --- I will he's in at 7:30 will update w/ numbers and the latest. I have everything and I will stay home to monitor so I can see what the increase is doing. He just ate his breakfast and is looking out the window but this cat turns for the worse in a heartbeat so I'm breathing down his neck right now watching for any sign...the kittens or the young cats are milling and jumping around him - he's just a little irritated and swats them with his double paws - which is a good sign. Last week he couldn't even be bothered to do that..
See you later thanks for all your help!

Lauren,

I'm sorry I can't give dosing advice; I'm still a bit of a newbie myself. I hope Ozzie's tummy settles. Let us know what the vet says.

yes Barbara, I;m testing every time he goes to the loo. I tested at 5.15 neg trace but and this is what I learned they do not show up on the strips till 24 hours later...I'm waiting on the vet to call back re his dose and his throwing up bile...post in a bit. many thanks

Lauren:

I just don't know how to more clearly communicate this with you. Without a spreadsheet, I'm crippled. I can't keep track of your dosing and Ozzie's numbers. I'm clueless. I've been pleading that you get a spreadsheet set up even while Ozzie was in the hospital. Mystery offered to set one up for you yesterday.

At least for me, I think it would be irresponsible and dangerous to make a dose recommendation without data. It would be no different than shooting blind. I'm truly sorry -- I can't in good conscience make a suggestion. Maybe someone else feels more comfortable doing so. I just don't want to make a complicated situation potentially worse.

Is Ozzie eating? The elements that contribute to ketones are not enough insulin, an infection, and not eating.
