Overprotective? Or did I really mess up?

We recently switched insulins from ProZinc to Lantus. Last weekend my cat began to act very strange - she was wobbly, couldn't walk... it was terrifying! I rushed her to the emergency vet and she was quickly diagnosed as hypoglycemic. When I followed up with my regular vet on Monday, she assured me my cat was fine. I bought her a home testing system and we adjusted the insulin back down to one unit twice per day.

The problem is that I'm paranoid over everything that happens to my cat now. So this evening I was playing with her, and rolled a ball toward her (the ball is filled with catnip and cotton and covered in cloth) and since she has cataracts she didn't see it and it hit her in the nose (the ball was going kind of fast). She ran away, and looked absolutely terrified of me. My heart is crushed - I've pet her and given her treats but I am terrified she thinks I tried to hurt her.

She can't really be hurt by the ball can she?

Thanks,

Savo

She'll be okay I'm sure. Accidents happen. I accidentally kicked Scooter in the nose the other day! I was washing dishes and he came up under my feet and I didn't see him. He took off running and hid for a while but he forgave me after a treat and some pets. :P

Hi,

Yes, accidents do happen. One of my cats has a long, long tail that just seems sometimes to get trodden on.... He yowls or hisses and runs off. I've learned not to go after him. I used to run up to him and try to reassure and placate him, but it just seemed to make things worse. It was as though it made him associate me - even more strongly - with the 'injury' he'd just received. I've found that if I just let him run off, and I leave him alone for a few minutes, then I can walk up to him and stroke him easily, and the whole incident is quickly forgotten....

Maui is blind. So, imagine all the things she bumps into. She's fine and doesn't seem to be upset or angry if I do something to her. A ball in the nose, to a blind or limited vision cat is startling.

Think of it this way. When you are asleep and someone pokes or jumps on you, aren't you startled? But then you quickly get over it. It's the same with a ball in the nose. What I've learned to do is speak more to Maui, especially when I see she is going to walk into the wall, I say "wall Maui" and she stops and turns.

When you throw the ball, tell her the ball is coming, she will learn to listen to your voice and understand what's going on.

Mabye it would help if the ball had a little jingly bell in it? Then she'd know it was coming fer sure! I'm sure kitty will forgive you cat_pet_icon

awww, I am sure your kitty is fine .. Once I stepped backwards into the hall and ended up stepping right onto mocha's paw!! Of course, I freaked out and ran after her with her hissing at me the whole way .. I was sobbing, peter was trying to get mocha .. I started hyperventilating, ok, not really, but I was a mess!

I made peter take her to the vet for me since I had to leave for work .. We didn't have a carrier big enough for us at the time so we had to empty out a huge rubber maid tote, peter had to saw a hole in the top so she could breathe .. He ran her to the emergency vet while I was a mess all morning at work ..

ER vet told peter, if she can walk and run and put weight on this leg, she's fine .. Talk about totally over reacting!

She does, however to this day, hold up her paw after I tell her NO ... like she's saying, but don't you remember .. 8 years ago you stepped on my paw .. I should be allowed to do whatever I want!
