has anyone ever used over the counter insulin? we are currently using Lantus, but I heard from my vet that you can buy over the counter insulin at Walmart.

That is Novolin-R and is an in-and-out insulin. Not used as the daily insulin for cats, but a few of us use it as a supplement to Lantus/Lev for high dose, unregulated kitties. Rex does not fall in that category and it should not be used for him. Even a tiny amount of Novolin-R (or as we say "R") can cause BG numbers to dive dangerously low.

In Canada our insulin is over the counter i.e. we do not need a prescription for it.
Depends where you live. Lantus is OTC in Canada.

It's well worth the trip. Insulin in Canada is very inexpensive.
