Here is the back story:
Vinny was diagnosed with diabetes the last week of December 2011. He was weaned off of Lantus the end of January. Had really good BG off insulin. I get a call from my husband at work yesterday that Vinny is throwing up foam/clear liquid. I get home and do a BG on him. It is 300.... Really high. I call the vet and they tell me to come down. They check him for keystones and there are none. His BG if 296 on their monitor. They gave him some fluids under the skin to rehydrate him and send me home with a fluid bag which they taught me how to administer every 12 hours. He is extremely tired and they also gave him a shot for pain and a shot to help stop the vomiting. I also gave him .5 units of Lantus when I got home per their instructions. My husband stayed up with him all night and all he did was sleep. No eating or drinking. I took his BG this morning and it was 120. Called the vet and they said if he doesn’t eat they will give me a pill that will spark his appetite. Also took his BG at 2pm and it was 207. Gave him the appetite stimulate and nothing. They said we had to syringe feed him and we did. I just don't understand how this can be so bad. His BG is lower than when he was first diagnosed I just don’t understand why he's so tired and not eating and drinking still. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tina,

Well that does not sound good at all. Did the vet do bloodwork and test urine to look for a problem? and what about pancreatitis? If they have not taken blood for testing, I think you should have them run some tests.

Can you find out the names of the meds they gave? What pain med was given, and for the vomiting was it cerenia or something else? What was the appetite stimulant given? It's good that you are giving fluids at home, but but if he has pancreatitis, it's quite painful and you should get some buprenex from the vet to have at home.

If pancreatitis, it's usually treated with something for nausea/upset stomach, pain med, and fluids.
You can give pepcid AC 10mg tabs cut in 4. Daily max is 5mg so you can give 1/4 tab BID. For pain, most people get buprenex from the vet, and fluids you are already giving.

Many things can come on fast. If you can pick up a container of KETOSTIX at the pharmacy, you can start testing urine for ketones.

Syringe feeding is a good idea; you don't want to go too long with no food. Is the syringed food staying down? Are the fluids you give making a difference, and the lump from the fluids, is it going down quickly or does it take awhile to go down/spread.

It could be that he's a bit sick and it's caused his BG to go up. Lots of times, people will see their cats have higher BG when sick then after meds, the numbers come down.

I hope the appy stimulant starts working soon. See if you can get some info on testing from your vet and ask how long before you get some results.
