Out of remission - possible infection to blame?

Hi! I'm not sure if anyone remembers Snits and I, but she was insulin for not long and then went in remission and has been in it for about a year and and four months. She tested good early in the month, but now is doing pretty poorly. I admittedly neglected to test much at all this month so I'm not sure when she started to slip. She gets monthly solensia injections (this month it was the 25th) and the tech noticed she was very swollen this month. This is honestly not that unusual for her since she often has excessive gas, but it was more so than usual. They took her to tap her to get fluids out but got very little and what they did get they couldn't identify. He did tell me the swelling was just excessive gas again, but was sort of alarmed about what the liquid could be and why she always had so much gas. I suggested maybe IBD, but they thought possibly an infection. She is seeing a specialist on the 5th. On Thanksgiving I checked her, she was 157 and has progressively gotten worse from there. Her PMPS was 365 so I administered one unit tonight and will check her throughout.

She is otherwise acting normal, eats ferociously and still drinks a lot - even in remission she drank a lot.

She primarily gets friskies pate, but was getting an occasional serving of elsey's. I've also tried young again, but she got sick with something most likely unrelated (either ivdd or arthritis) and didn't want to risk it.

I guess my question is, how possible is it for cats to go into remission again?

I am the least person to give you a correct answer, of the reason of such high BG, I do know that illnesses and medications may result in BG changes; not all cats go on remission, my Corky for example will be lifetime diabetic, if he went out of remission, I assume you would need to go back to where you started when diagnosed, I will tag another member that is very knowledgeable on cats illnesses, and cats medicines overall. sorry you are going thru this again 🤗

Yes, second and third remissions are possible. On the Lantus forum Nestle just started his second OTJ trial. I'm glad you got on with testing Snits and giving insulin so quickly. The faster you can get her regulated again, the better the chances for a subsequent remission.

I noticed that you had previously commented that Snits get frequent hairballs. If still happening, I'd mention that to the specialist vet. I expect an ultrasound may be in her future. Frequent hairballs are one symptom of IBD. How is her weight trending?

She doesn't so much get hairballs anymore but she does vomit maybe once or twice a week. I'm pretty sure she has some absorption/gastro issues. Definitely going to bring it up with the specialist vet! Good news is, she's responding well to her insulin and her numbers aren't worrying me now. She's stopped acting like she's starving. Thanks so much!

Did you dose this AM? The Units cell is blank. Reminder that the Lantus depot is still building, her numbers will probably improve even more over the next few days. Hope you can monitor her closely.

Vomiting once or twice a week is unusual. Good think you have the specialist appointment coming up.
