WCR: So far, so good. I woke up this morning earlier than normal to see her laying on the carpet next to the litter boxes. I decided to feed her the missed +3 meal from earlier since she was in her cubby hole napping at that time. She had eaten about 3g of it, so I put it aside to try to feed her later. About 1/2 hour later, she did finish it, albeit slowly as she was in nappy mode. She hardly eats when she's in that state. LOL She got up after a bit, and started to walk around, so I fed her the 16g snack, and she ate that all up.

You know... It really IS hard to not test during the day. Your inner self wants to test your kitty to see how he/she's doing. I haven't gone back to the fridge to get the insulin since that other night. That's the part that I don't miss at all. I probably won't miss the testing, either, when that time comes to not do it anymore. I'm sure that I'll be sporadically testing, but not as much as I had been in the past. I'll need to read up on the OTJ Trial information to get myself acquainted with this. Definitely all new territory for us both. :D I'm pretty sure that Blackie doesn't mind not being poked in the side anymore, either. I know I wouldn't miss it if I were her. :D

Sending tons of healing vines, positive thoughts, and prayers to whoever needs them.

MY WISH: For God to help heal the broken hearts of those who lost a beloved pet and/or human... For God to help those ailing make a full and speedy recovery... For everyone, including Blackie, to have great #s... For everyone, including Blackie, to be permanently OTJ.

I am so, so, so excited for Blackie and you! IF Skooter ever goes OTJ, I am thinking the testing is gonna be a hard habit to break. But I am sure you will be up for the challenge if it means no more insulin for sweet Blackie!

Keep up the excellent work, buddy!

Keep up he good work Blackie. Sure is nice when they can get OTJ. Hope Toby can some day but, have my doubts him being a high dose kitty.
Take Care, Peg and Toby

Thank you, ladies. It is very exciting, if a bit surreal still. LOL :D She's currently laying next to a heater keeping warm. I could tell she was getting tired as I was feeding her, and after she ate her 2nd meal, I laid her gently on the floor next to it to keep warm. She'll be up and walking around again soon, I'm sure, and when she does, she'll get another feeding. It's obviously easier to feed her when she's alert as opposed to when she's tired. LOL

Blackie, you are lookin' so good. Happy day 3!! :D:D:D :cat:

Hi Angela, I'm sure you'll get used to not poking and not shooting very soon. And you'll still have your fuds routine, so you won't be entirely at sea!!:)

Have a wonderful day,

Ella & Rusty

Yep, I will always have her fuds routine for sure. Definitely won't be changing that anymore, unless it's a weight issue, then there'll be food amount adjustments but no feeding time changes. This is certainly working for her now. Like the old saying goes... "If it ain't broke, don't fix!" LOL :D

Yes, it is very difficult to stop testing when it has been such a routine for so long. The first time around when Sami went on her :otj: Trial I would sometimes get test mid cycle, but they where not necessary, but it helped to wean me off the testing as well.

Then after the Trial was complete I still tested once a day for about a week, and then slowly started testing every couple of days, then once a week and then even longer, sometimes more than a month. But I think you want to test at least once a month because then you can catch a problem sooner. Sometimes I would test before meal sometimes after meals there really wasn't a set plan, maybe there should have been, I don't know.

So far it looks like Blackie is doing quite nicely on the trial. Keep up the great numbers Blackie!

Fantastic AMPS! Keep it going Blackie!

I'm actually enjoying not testing her at all except for the PS times right now. Feeding her at 4:00 a.m. isn't an issue... If I need extra sleep, I can always nap later during the morning since I don't work right now.

This really is exciting. I am so darned happy for you and Blackie, Angela!!!! How far she has come! :D:D:D

I highly recommend testing at least once a month after she is officially OTJ. I did the tapered testing, too, when Cinco went OTJ - every couple of days, then once a week, then every two weeks, etc. Unfortunately, I got complacent and lazy and went almost six months without testing, so I missed a chance to catch him as his BGs started rising. I only tested him again when I saw he was drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot and by then he had fallen out of remission! Don't do what I did! No that I think you would, but just wanted to share my mistake so you know what can happen.

Keep up the good work, Blackie, and eat your fuds! :cat:

:D:D:D Looking good Blackie

I still test Vyktor once a week. I think it's easier to remember than once a month and I plan to be right on top of it if it ever comes back. It's a bit of a health indicator too. At one point his numbers started rising a little out of the normal range - lo and behold he needed a dental.

I'm starting to get a bit apprehensive with these PM #s rising like this. I'm also beginning to wonder if it's just coincidence since she hasn't had any insulin for a few days and her body's readjusting itself... Or perhaps my DH picked her up before the test time (she doesn't care for him as it is, and will protest every time he picks her up)... Or am I doing this prematurely now...? Frankly, I'm starting to get a bit concerned. Her AM #s are fine; it's her PM #s are starting to worry about.

I guess you never got the official "go ahead" on the OTJ trial, LOL! We would have encouraged you to go to 0.1u before stopping, but truly, i think she's doing fine. Everything is still all green - i wouldn't worry about those last 2 pmbg tests. I'm over here WOOTING right along with you! Hang on to the directions below because they include directions for post-trial.

Here are the OTJ Trial Instructions:
Start the trial on the next green pre shot.

If he/she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day. If he/she is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his/her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!

Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. He/she may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.

After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him/her the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.
Good luck with the trial!!!

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!

So exciting! I didn't get permission to go to trial and skipped the .1U dose too
Your numbers still look fabulous! I would expect a little upswing because there isn't that little bit of insulin going in and the pancreas is going to be adjusting to that missing. Just so long as it doesn't look like a loss of the control, all is well.

I test the boys more than needed. Sometimes its because they did something/ate something/are on some med that makes me want to check. Other times I've just picked up the canister of strips and they've heard it and come running and its just easier to test and be done than convince them they don't need to be tested. If I test one, the other one is often there waiting for their turn too. Smokey was the same way and it took quite a while to get her adjusted to eating without us testing and pretending to give her insulin first.
