on thrusday i had to be away for a full 24 hours due to my mom being in the hospital, so i could only leave out some dry food to ensure Jewel would get some food while i was gone. i figured having a little bit of dry food would be better than no food at all (not sure if this was the best choice or not). she went right back to low carb FF as soon as i got home on friday afternoon

i checked her BG today and she is at 311. she is diet controlled and has been off insulin for almost 2 months and her BG has typically been in the range of 120-160.

i'm just wondering how long the extra sugar will remain in her system. should i just wait it out, or intervene with a little bit of insulin?

her pancreas is functioning, not 100% but still doing some of the work nonetheless, i've seen her go from 300 to 120 only 3 hours after food (no insulin). i didnt do a reading before food this morning but the 311 is 2.5 hours after food.

and also, i mistakenly bought some FF chuncks with gravy, if i were to rinse out the gravy, and only feed her the 'meat' would it cut down on the carbs?

Next time you can freeze the low carb food and let her graze on it as it thaws. I also use an automatic feeder that feeds him while I am gone.

So is she in the 120-160 range without insulin? We generally say kitties off insulin should range from 44-120 with the majority of the time spent in double digits. It sounds like she might be running high and might need a little mini dose of insulin now and then until she is down into the lower range. When your life settles down, you can post over on the forum for your insulin and ask for advice.

it is now 2 hours after her last reading and she is at 212. still high but she is on her way down. she reacts really strongly to stongly to insulin (maybe cos her pancreas is doing part of the work??) so im hesitant to give her some now, especially since her number is falling.

shes due for her afternoon snack pretty soon and i'm sure she'll go even lower after that (i hope) since eating always seems to trigger a response

i'll be sure to put some wet food in the freezer right now in case i have to be away again in the future. usually i'm prepared but things just happened so fast and i didnt have time

I have a silicone cupcake pan which just fits a can of FF. When frozen, they just pop out and I keep them in a freezer bag.

What kind of insulin? Some are easier to mini dose than others.

caninsulin. i know its not the best, but it was the cheapest. and at the time my vet said jewel probably wouldnt even need insulin for very long and could be diet controlled instead. i guess i couldnt justify spending a hundred bucks on something that i only ended up using 5 times and goes bad after a while anyway

Canninsulin is one of the easier insulins to mini dose with since it has no shed. If you want help, just start a new thread and ask. I haven't used it but I have helped a number of people who were able to get their kitties OT with it.
