OT peeing issues - update

Hi all! I'm sure this would fit in the Main Health area better, but I have always posted in here for Rex.

First of all, Rex is doing great with his numbers. I was out of town last weekend so I decided when I came back, I would start once a day testing. Most people would be now testing weekly but not me! It's odd... when Rex has had YA within the day of the test, it's usually lower than if he hadn't eaten any YA. I wonder if it's because YA is zero carbs and Friskies is 5%.

Now the reason why I'm posting is Rex is still peeing in the same area in the basement and I don't know what to do. It's not every time. He does it even if I just cleaned the boxes. We use Simple Green Cat spray that works great on carpet, but it's not working as well in the basement. Our basement floor is sealed so it's not porous. I need to make sure there's no plastic anything sitting on the floor or he will pee on it. His favorite is plastic bags from the store.

My other question is - a cat, probably Keena, is missing the litter box so he's peeing over the edge or onto the wall. Any suggestions? I just bought new high sided boxes and it's better but not 100%.

IDK if this is an option (or if you've tried it), but could you put a litter box where he keeps peeing?

One of our past cats had that issue in the (unused) dining room and my parents just put a box there. Eliminatuon issue was... eliminated?

And i don't have any suggestions for Keenas issue... do you have any covered boxes? =/

I did have large tote boxes, but I started to notice Keena was being a bit territorial after a long time. I thought maybe that's why Rex started going somewhere else.

I haven't tried putting a box there. It's a good option. I need to do a deep cleaning of the area first. I wasn't able to because my DH had things in that area that he just put up the other day after me telling him I couldn't do anything.
 
When was the last time you replaced the actual litter boxes? The plastic can retain the smell, in spite of cleaning. Shining a black light on them can be revealing. :eek: Maybe try a new box where he is peeing, and gradually move it over to where you want the box to be. For the over the box incidents, I just surrounded the box with puppy pee pads. Any chance Keena has arthritis? After Neko's acupuncture sessions, her squatting was deeper and more on target.
 
I just replaced the boxes this past Monday for the 2nd time. Before that, I was trying something else for about 2-3 months, but I recently discovered that they were not high enough for the cat(s). I had a rug underneath the boxes with a rubber backing. Needless to say, it was nasty underneath!

I thought about Cassie's suggestion of putting a box in the spot then moving it gradually.

Keena is a Ragdoll and you would never guess he's 14, not 4. I might do the pee pads and see how much is being missed before taking the next step.
 
I wann rule out another obvious thing (for the rex issue)... have you changed the litter brand. Mango had some issues with the cheap, scented litter and took her displeasure to peeing on Kellys bed. (Which made me feel good ;))

I did think about that. I've been using Fresh Step for years. Recently, I switched to their unscented kind, but it looks exactly the same. Do you think Rex wants his litter to have a pleasant scent??
 
I also should mention Rex is front declawed. I'm totally against that, but he was already declawed and neutered when we found him as a stray. He hates anyone touching his front paws unless you do it just right. The vet rejected the idea he could be in pain.
 
Maybe the litter cause pain? I have heard of people switching to the "softer" litters for sensitive pawed cats? I am thinking maybe corn-based or I forget what it was made out of!
 
With my Marvin, when he started peeing outside his box, there was two reasons. The first was UTI, which of course is where I found out he had diabetes too. He got better for a few weeks, however his neuropathy was got worse and I also had thought higher side litter boxes would help, but he couldn't get in and out, so would pee again just beside it, or somewhere else. I ended up using a cover (top) of one of the plastic bins I had, so he could just walk into it and that worked. I put puppy pads around it, which he sometime uses instead, as he won't go if there is something already in his litter. Having more than one litter helped in the past, however would need to cut one of the sides so he could simply walk in :)
 
Update: I bought 2 more boxes as they are slightly higher. I also picked up pee pads for the back side to be used over the new rug (indoor/outdoor type). If I don't have a rug, litter spreads all over the basement floor instead of being contained to one area.

Wish me luck! I'll get everything set up after dinner.
 
If this doesn't work: back to old litter, one box where Rex is being naughty, 2 extra higher sided boxes, and pee pads, I don't know what else to try. :arghh:

I still need to finish cleaning the entire basement but I need DH's help moving heavy things first.
 
I'm not using covered boxes anymore. Pee always leaked out where the top connected to the bottom. Then I made my own with tote boxes and saw Keena would terrorize cats so they couldn't come out. Now I'm doing open boxes to eliminate those problems and created new ones. :banghead:

I was using Fresh Step with Frebreze for a long time with no issues. Then I saw they had a new unscented kind so I started that. It's close to when Rex started going in another place so it could be one or all factors. :confused:
 
My solution was a large hooded corner litter box. I see they still make them. Nature's Miracle Just For Cats Advanced Hooded Corner Cat Litter Box. I used it for a long time without the hood---it is deep. I have 2 of them. I use the hoods now.
 
Time for an update. Not much to report. I bought the old litter that is scented. The cats definitely prefer the new unscented litter so I'm phasing that back out. The pee pads have come in handy a few times. The cats are using the litter box placed where Rex has been inappropriately urinating more than the other boxes, probably because it's the first box they see. Rex has another spot that he's urinating in so I have pee pads there, but I plan to move the first box over to that spot and see how it goes with the first spot.

As for Keena missing, that has gotten a lot better. :)

I still need to clear out more of the basement. That's on the agenda when my DH and kids are gone for 10 days.
 
This morning I found pee on my vacuum and a big puddle underneath I use to vacuum the rugs the litter boxes are on! What the heck? The vacuum is only 2 feet from the boxes.
 
For my stand up pee cat (ally, not cc) who sometimes pees over the top we attached command hooks to the wall and hung pee pads.
 
My recently dececed cat Zim didn't like to pee in a box. Our compromise so I didn't strangle him was to put puppy pads on the floor by the box and he peed there. Almost no more peeing in other places.
 
Do you think Rex could be upset about the drop in attention he is getting since he went OTJ?

You know, I have thought about that as well. You would think a cat would be happy about not being poked several times a day! I'm checking him only once a day now. I wasn't always giving treats when I poked him so it's not that. He's not peeing inappropriately so much now so I'm hoping once I finish cleaning up the basement and get all the plastic things off the floor, it should be good. He likes to pee on plastic things. :oops:
