What do you all use for pain relief in kitties? I gave my civvie the last dose of bupe I had in the house earlier for her latest cystitis flare up (these have been happening more and more frequently...) and was wondering if there was anything you all could suggest that doesn't require a prescription. I might be able to get my vet to give me something next time, but I'd rather have something on hand I can give at any time.

My first boy was given Gabapentin but I think that's still prescription. Vet had told us we could use aspirin on another (Might still want to ask Vet for proper dose). Never Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or Naproxen Sodium though. Some pet stores have pain medicines for animals.

How did the gabapentin work for your kitty? Been thinking of trying this. Angel has neuropathy in her back legs and I just worry she's in pain.

Oh Cherish, I don't even remember, I lost him over 8 years ago. It didn't seem to do much for my dog. I've seen buprenorphine (bupe for short) used for diabetic kitties. Maury has neuropathy as well, more so in his hind legs and a little in the front. I worried about him being in pain too but I figured if he was, then he just wouldn't move around much. He's been moving more lately though! I think I even saw him a little more on his front toes when sitting upright, not meatloafed ;). Even members that use Zobaline or B12 injections have mentioned what seems to help the most is getting numbers under control :). I've also started trying to get 1 play session with him to make him walk to his toy and he's doing little trots now :cat:. New pair of patience pants every day! :D

Phoebe is on gabapentin for inflammation from her IBD and pancreatitis. It works great. Fairly cheap med. The only down fall is you have to split the capsule content into 3rds. Or get a compounding pharmacy to make into an oil. Phoebe wouldn't eat the oil so we use the powder. It's makes her a little stoned. But also calms her down. It's a human drug used alot in nerve pain. I use it for migraines.

Can't remember if we talked about this. I get soul crushing migraines and take the Imitrex inhalers, 20mg. It's a miracle drug if you take it before total onset and you have a medical plan. That's just part of my "adventures in neurology".
I found I am allergic to the immitrex! Wish I could take it. Found myself in the er when immitrex was first introduced, I can't tell you the burning pain it caused to my scalp. Like it was on fire. Soo gabapentin it is. If I take at onset with the spots, it does pretty good. It makes it barable, and the length of time is decreased.

Angel at ER "My migraine is gone because it burned away" :p

Where do you get the gabapentin?

Great doctor/bedside manner story:) I have a stent in the back of my head with some other medical goodies. Because Imitrex is an antihistamine I was told not to take it anymore because it could loosen my stent. At my 3 year follow-up with my neurosurgeon she had that magic software that along with an MRI lets you fly through your brain like virtual reality. She put her hand on my shoulder and said "See, it's a part of you now". That was probably the kindest and most reassuring thing a doctor has ever told me.! So we figured then that my nuts and bolts were never coming undone and I could use Imitrex again. Yipee!
So when the day comes I'll be cremated, hopefully in about 40 years, so if anyone knows a discreet scrap metal dealer and has a strong stomach I know where $30,000 worth of platinum is but you have to promise no Walking Dead stuff and 50% goes to my wife. Hey, it's just recycling right?

At least in the USA gabapentin is a prescription med. My civi Moxie is on 50 mg gabapentin twice daily. I divide up the 100 mg capsules into halves and put them in capsules. I get it at Walgreens with prescription card I downloaded off the internet. The card saved about $5. Moxie has been on it since last July for joint problems

Absolutely, recycling is good. :)

Bottom line, you should discuss what pain relief medicine to use with your vet.
Absolutely! BUPE is industrial strength. Noah needs big-time dental work but only has a 10% of making it through surgery. Lucky for us he has no problem with stairs or wet food.

Remembered two things today at breakfast. Advil is death to dogs, don't know about cats and artificial sweeteners, don't know which ones or what ingredient (the breakfast) are toxic to cats and dogs.
