We had to make the most difficult decision yesterday with our best friend, and companion of about 14 years. Goldie, our German Shepherd, was laid to rest at our vet's office at 2:44 p.m. She went peacefully. She was very old for her breed, and her hind quarters were giving out on her due to hip dysplacia (sp). She tried with all her beautiful might up to her final moments on our property to protect it against a cat that was outside of the fenceline. She barked her strongest bark, and tried to run, but couldn't due to the pain. I went inside crying, with the image of that moment forever imprinted on my mind. We held her as the vet inserted the syringe to put her under, as if she was being prepped for surgery. She jumped, allowing the needle to move out of her vein, so the vet had to stem the blood. She shaved her right rear leg, and reinserted the syringe. My husband held her body tightly, and told her it was ok to let go. I held her head, and told her I loved her very much. We both listened to her breathing lessening as the drug took her away from us.
She is now running in those wonderful meadows alongside her big brother, Lucky, whom we lost 6 years ago. I asked my beloved Precious kitty to accept Goldie with open paws.
I'm giving her the largest candle on this message board. In my heart, she deserved it, and much, much more.
