OT: Freeze Dried Treats

I am wondering what kind of freeze dried treats others give their kitties. I have been giving Furball Simply Nourish freeze dried chicken dog treats (it is a better buy than the cat treats). Lately some of the pieces have been hard as a rock. I don't think a dog could even chew them. I am considering switching and would like some input.

What kind do you give? Where do you buy them?

I'm not sure this is OT. After all, the freeze dried chicken is key to T/F/S! Without the kitty crack, I'm not sure I'd get as much testing done on Miss Polly. That's pretty much on topic.

I use Purebites, Freeze Dried Chicken Breast Dog Treat. I buy them at my local mom&pop pet store here in my small town.

And yes, some of them are hard as rocks. I just shove a fingernail into the hunk and sort of pry into pieces. Or I've had to do some crushing with the bottom of a small glass. I resorted to a small pliers once, too. Worked pretty well but I have since misplaced those pliers.

Of course, if the piece is too hard to break apart, I just give it to the dog! He's a lab; eating rocks is part of his genetic code. :lol:

I use Whole Life Chicken Treats but they can sometimes be hard too. I get the dog sized bag too.
 
I used to use Whole Life. Then one of my internet friends found Honeyville.com. They sell freeze dried chicken and turkey for beans. I buy a 23 oz can of chicken for $39 plus $4.95 shipping. The turkey was the same but they just raised the price by about $7. That is so much cheaper than any of the pet kind. They are 100% chicken without even salt. From time to time they have 10-20% off sales as well. I'm on my second can right now. Max loves it.
 
I have had much better success with the whole life turkey

Most all of them crumble into a powder really easily. I occasionally get a hard one and toss it to the dog instead.
All of my purebites turkey got hard, or chewy and stop crumbling.

This item crumbles every time no matter what and has been what mine prefers lately to get her to eat.
I really recommend this product.
 
Do these freeze dried treats spike #s?

The reason why I ask this is when I was making Blackie some steamed chicken, her #s would rise because of it. So, I stopped. Now, am curious about the freeze dried stuff since I've never gave her that before.
 
The honeyville does have a fair amount of powder as well. I just put a pinch on top of Max's food if he isn't as hungry as I need him to be. I've never had hard pieces.
 
I've never had Furball's BG go up from giving her freeze dried treats. Thanks for the information everyone. I have a lot to check out.
 
The fd is 100% protein without anything else added so you aren't adding any carbs. So it's like feeding a chicken breast. I think any food can raise the BG a little.

Tess is absolutely bonkers about the freeze dried duck breast, chicken just won't make it anymore! The duck and turkey heats are great too. None of these have ever been hard and I haven't seen BG spikes.
 
I gave Ripley PureBites (got them from Petco). She liked the chicken and turkey varieties, but loved the shrimpies best. :lol:
They did not raise her BGs.
