My vet recommended I get some clippers for Furball because she gets mats sometimes with her long hair. She recommended Oster clippers, which are very expensive. I don't know if this is something that would work or even is a good idea. Does anyone else use clippers? If so, what brand to you use? Thanks.

I use Oster clippers for dogs and cats. I have 2 problems with it - the shoe gets hot after about 10 minutes so have to stop and let it cool. The other problem is that when the blades need replaced rather than just resharpened, they have to be ordered from Oster and are expensive. The one I use is about $65 at PetSmart and Tractor Supply. The blades are 'super steel'. They can be resharpened 7-8 times before they need to be replaced. Keep in mind I trim 7 EXTREMELY hairy dogs, one cat that hair never stops growing and cat bikini cuts - gets lots of use!

Thanks Lyresa and Chris. I'll check into getting some clippers. I just hope they work on Furball's mats. I don't think I'll get the super expensive Oster clippers though.

Carla,
Just don't make the mistake I did...buy one specifically for pets, not the human one. There really IS a difference in the way the cutting head is made.

Hi Carla!

This is what I used for Lucy.
It's a trimmer rather than a clipper, but it worked well for removing occasional mats.
It's smaller than clippers but I thought It worked well enough for my purpose.
I liked it because.
- It's quieter. Most clippers are very loud, and scared Lucy.
- It's cordless. I could use it wherever Lucy happened to be without worrying about the cord/wall socket.
- The blade is smaller than clipper's blade, so it was easier to maneuver around mats.
- It's much less expensive.

I don't know if they sell a replacement blade for this model.
I cleaned it as well as I could after each use, and I've never had to replace it.
And if the blade gets dull and they don't sell a replacement part, it wouldn't be too bad to just buy a new one since the price is not expensive.

I also have this one which I also like.
The blade comes off for more detailed cleaning, so I used this one to clip her poopy bum hair.
Good luck!
I hope it helps!

Hi again,

This is another one I wanted to try.
I didn't have a chance to actually buy it while Lucy was with me, and Ginger doesn't mat, but I've seen someone else use it.
It's small, and seemed really easy to handle.
And quiet too.
