Hi All.....I will move this to Health, if should, but I feel comfortable here. Okay? Thank you?

Four year old civvie, Clancy, has slight gum redness. He just had dental in June. Nice cleaning, no extractions.
Dr Dave, said gingivitis, and prescribed Clindamycin. One mL.....that's a full dropper.
It is SO bitter, he gagged, and coughed........I tasted it....it's horrible!
Checkers never complained about it, altho he got only 3/4 mL

Here's the question;
--Is it just possible I just squirted it improperly, like on the back of his throat, and was irritating?
--Does anyone know a sure-fire way to disguise the taste? I gave him tuna immediately after, but he'll get wise to that.

I remember Dave mentioning having an AB, compounded for a client's dog....in tutti fruiti flavor.

Is that even possible for this stuff?

Hi Barb :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: !!!

You could also call the pharmacy at Drs Foster and Smith...they do all sorts of compounding.

When Trix had her dental, the vetty gave us the clindamycin in a pill - it was small enough to give her in a pill pocket, and she never had an issue with taking, so maybe that's another option, too.

I really like Drs. Foster and Smith. They are a good company.
J.D. had the tablets after his first dental and the liquid (2ML BID) after his second dental. He did okay with the liquid.
Do you try put it into the side of Clancy's mouth?

Jupiter hated the clindamycin too!! But it didnt make him as sick as the other AB's did....

I would have his AB dose in one dropper

and in a syringe I would have the juice from a FF appetizer....(I used a few different flavors at different times)

Would quickly give AB then the squirt the FF juice in his mouth... because if I didnt he would try to spit it out....

I would always immediately offer him one of his favorite foods to try to get the yucky taste out of his mouth.

Ooh, good ideas here.
I called clinic and altho Dr Dave won't be there until Tues, my concern/question, is going into his mailbox, and I'm to call Tues morn.
I forgot he mentioned pill, and I said I preferred liquid, 'cause I thought it'd be easier. Thanks Amy and Dyana

I also forgot that FF makes a tuna food. Sheesh, it was Check's favorite, how could I forget? . I like the idea of having a syringe of tuna juice at the ready. People tuna has unsafe veg broth in it. Thanks Jamie

Thanks Chris..liver flavor? Checks woulda loved it....not Clancy.

I was told that they have it in capsule, but that wouldn't work, sprinkled on food.

Hi Barb-
I just went through this with Hank preceding and after his dental (which you and I had our furkids in for the same day).
it was miserable. And I had his compounded with triple fish flavor at the pharmacy. He literally got the point where he gagged when I gave it to him. And I mean repeated gagging. It was horrendous. I kept it in the refrigerator because I heard that helps. One person recommended I might try to squirt it into his meals...but he was not eating enough at the time for me to be able to reliably dose him. So that may be an option for you to try...mix it in with food.
Also, I have heard you can get injectable version, but did not check for that. I may in future if ever prescribed again.
The AB cause him terrible GI issues even after we stopped taking it. Give probiotics if you aren't. I started with pearls, then Fortiflora I cannot say it helped Hank enough but cannot imagine if it were any worse. Sienne recommends RenewLife Critical care. We had some Renew life here but not the critical care. He just was not eating enough for me to count on anything involving food and that is another you sprinkle on food.

I'm sure you probably have compounding pharmacies near you. I think the ones here mail/ship (ask me if you are interested) But maybe you could take what you already have by the local place and possibly they can add fish flavor to it???
For whatever it is worth..it didn't mask enough for Hank but ECID. I imagine it would have only been worse without it added.

I sure hope Clancy' also avoids an upset tummy.

I agree with Betty. I would definitely give him a probiotic about 3 to 4 hours after the ABs.
I gave the ReNew Critical Care (1/3 capsule) mixed into J.D.'s food. It's tasteless, at least.

Hi Barb,
So sorry to hear that Clancy has gingivitis. I hope that some of the suggestions you got this evening will work for you. Definitely give a probiotic to counteract the a/b, which will kill all the good bacteria in the digestive tract along with the bad ones. You can use plain yogurt with active cultures, too (if Clancy will eat dairy).
Have a good evening. Sending lots of healing vines for Clancy.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty
