OT - Auto Feeders

We use the Petsafe 5 meals. It's great because it has 5 compartments. It runs on batteries though. Wish we could find on that plugs in.

We also use the Cat Mate (I think that's the brand). You can get one with a compartment below for a freezer pack to keep the food cold. I use that sometimes in the summer. Kitty does seem to prefer his food unchilled - mouse-temperature.

Last week I ordered the Q-Pet with four trays from Amazon - super good price and everything. It would have been really cool, but it wouldn't set time or or feed time. The only part that worked was the voice recorder, so I had to send it back. I was woe. I'm going to wander down to Petsmart later this week to get the PetSafe model.

We've used both Petsafe 5-meal and 2-meal. The 2-meal we quit using when the doors quit opening, the dial would move to just before it needed to and so it wouldn't clear enough to allow the door to swing open.

The Cat Mate C-20, two-compartment feeder is terrific. I have 2 of them. It works flawlessly and has a cold block that fits under the trays. (added bonus: it's made in England!!)

I also have the Petsafe 5-compartment, rotary feeder, which I do not like at all: if you don't get it lined up just right, it stops between compartments and the cat can't get his head into the opening to get the food. Also, no cold block to keep the food fresh in the summer.

I have the PetSafe 2 compartment and it's been working very well.

That one works but many cats eventually figure out how to pry open the lids which do not sit securely onto the base, just sort of hovers above the food trays :-Q My diabetic even pushed and flipped the feeder around the house in an attempt to get to the food  I didn't like how the timer could only be set in 2 hour increment and taking the batteries out and reinserting them (to make that annoying ticking noise stop when the feeder was not in use) was a PITA.

The 5 compartment one is pretty much cat-proof but there are exceptions. I made the mistake of mentioning this on Health once and someone posted (rather rudely, I thought) that the feeder was not cat-proof because her cats were able to push the tray around to get to the food and somehow broke the lid :?

An ice pack can be used with the 5 compartment feeder. I think it's the mini Catmate brand ice pack? I've seen this mentioned before.

I just ordered the one with the 2 sections. I don't think I need anything more than that as I'm typically home most of the time anyway. This is for when I won't be home to feed her in time (ie. snacks)

Hey Squeem.

I don't seem to have those problems with my cats. Either they are really dumb or very well behaved.

I know what you mean about the "ticky ticky", "grindy grindy" noise the feeder makes. But it isn't that loud for me and when I'm not using it I just put the feeder in the closet.

Before I bought my auto-feeder I read many reviews, here on FDMB and on several other sites, and with the choices available out there, either people loved them or they hated them.

Angela,

Based on what people have said here, if I were you, I would pick one, save the receipt and make sure the store will take it back if it doesn't work for you.
