I will try to make this short...
I learned something about Baxter this weekend.

First a little background about Baxter.
Baxter hasn't always been my cat. In the spring of 2007 Baxter...as I like to say ran away from his pervious owners bcatrun_gif . He lived 5 houses down from me. He was a outside cat that shared his food & water with possums & other neighborhood cats. He had a brother (Bailey) that looked just like him...so beautiful. I would go on nightly walks & both of them would come walking to the sidewalk wanting love. Sometimes would follow me a little ways. As time passed Bailey died of kidney disease. Baxter still lived outside. His owners family grew. Baxter in my opinion was neglected. His hair was knotted up, he never got love or attention. Late at night I would go down to his house & whistle for him from the street. He would come out from the bushes & meet me on the sidewalk. I brushed him, cut the knots out, cat_pet_icon & give him treats (yes unhealthy treats at that time). At times I would take food to him, yes high carb at that time. Geezz what I know now. ohmygod_smile He started to follow me & I would always take him back home. I got tired of doing that. I wanted a cat since my last blue point Siemese died in 2003. So I encouraged Baxter to follow me home. His owners knew what was going on & never said anything about it. I would tell them he was following me home. They put there house on the market & months later it sold. At this point Baxter was living at my house. His owners & I discussed that Baxter would be staying with me & would not make the move with them. DH wasn't to happy @-) ...oh well! He loves Baxter just doesn't want to admit it. cat_pet_icon
So in the beginning I would ask the owner questions about ie how old Baxter was. So currently I thought Baxter was about 13 or 14.

Fast forward to this weekend...
I was at a party this weekend & Baxters old owner was there. I told her Baxter was sick. I really didn't get a caring response from her...which wasn't surprising. :-x I explained what I go through everyday to keep Baxter healthy. She said I was really good to him....ummm no $&!¥ lady! Made me mad. I told her I really need to know Baxters age for vet purposes. She stood there & figured it out. Baxter is not 13 or 14....Baxter is about 16 years old going on 17! Baxter won't be that old if he would have stayed with them. nailbite_smile When my DH & I got home from the party I told him what old owner said....he asked did you ask her for $$ for all the damn vet bills we have...

Since learning his true age I question if its possible he will ever go into remission. It also made me sad to learn his true age because I think I might not have much longer with him. I am going to just enjoy everyday with him & love him more then the next day. cat_pet_icon

Thank you letting me share this with you.

Re: OT-A Learned Known Fact About Baxter

Thanks for sharing your story Jenn. I wouldn’t give up on remission, you just never know. Regulation is a good goal always.
And as for age, none of us know how much time we have left, so indeed every day is precious, but should be to folks and kitties of all ages, again you just don’t know.
I used to cat sit for a friend who had a 23 year old cat named Yoda. She was skinny and was on thyroid meds, but very happy to hunt mousies everyday and ran around like a kitten. Those folks moved out west and I lost touch with them but they took Yoda with them so she was going strong past 23-24 years...

Thanks for sharing Baxters story
He is lucky to have found you!

I agree with Donna
Age is just a number
and PLEASE NEVER give up on remission
Hope is a wonderful thing and sometimes that is all we have to keep us going...

What a fantastic story of how Baxter chose his momma bean! And he did, you know. :-D

Age is only a number. I've had weeks old kittens die in my lap. I've had 26+ year old kitties die. What matters is how we love them while we can. cat_pet_icon

What a great story. You both are so blessed to have each other. Enjoy each day as it is a blessing.

What a Great Story! My Kitty is 16.5 years old and is so much better this March than last. Kitties can live a long time......we never know how long any of us have left in our lives. And, do you really think the original owners know how old she is? Maybe they are wrong....

Baxter is lucky to have you! :-D

Thanks for sharing Baxter's story; he was very smart to choose you! And, the others are right - age is just a number. :-D

"Hello, little kittie! I've got some caaaaaannnnnndddddyyyyyy!" If that was a child, you might have been arrested! Thank goodness you are a loving cat person! How wonderful that you cared for Baxter - even before he became yours! I'm sure if he had his way, he'd have been with you the entire time! That being said, he has no reason to go anywhere - so enjoy all the kitty love for all your days! Thanks for sharing Baxter's story!

A little like Sneakers and me... but she chose me and lived at my house and then came back when they moved out  .

But for years I thought she was 11, 12, 13 (I thought) when diagnosed. Tui, my sister, finally added it all up and said that Sneakers and sister Olive (still with Tui) are 16 years old  .

She did ask me the other day why I decided to take on Sneakers diabetes since she was so old and could have had her pts. I said I could handle FD- luekemia or cancer not a chance but FD I was confident in.

That's how we got our Johnny cat, and Junior was passed around multiple neglectful homes as a kitten before we took him in. And I know they're thankful for that every day, no matter how old (we don't know their true ages either)

Let them play like kittens, hold them in "senior" moments, poke 'em, give 'em a little shot, and they'll always think "damn, life is good here"!!!!!!!!

Everyone of you are right. We don't know how long we have on earth. So just love & enjoy every moment you have with your family. Weather it be with humans or furry animals. Love them like there might not be tomorrow.

One of the neighbors wanted to call the cops on me because she would see me out there late at night brushing Baxter. She was a dog owner & she was known as "crazy dog lady" on our street. She use to walk with her Yorkies in a baby stroller. :dizcat DH sometimes called me catnapper in the beginning. So be it...I am giving Baxter the best of his life. With all the love & best food he never had in his early life. He has lots of love & thats why he is going to live a long time. :YMHUG:

I really enjoyed reading all the stories you posted. Cats are very special creatures. cat_pet_icon

Okay, so the "crazy dog lady" is gonna call the cops on the "crazy cat lady"? There'll be lots of laughter at the Dunkin Donuts in the morning!

Despite HOW he came to you, the bottom line is he came to the right person!

BTW: I have a plaque on my door that says, "That's Ms. Crazy Cat Lady to you!"

Yes I swear I live on Wistria Lane (Desprate Housewifes). She had talked about calling the cops on me to Baxters owners. She didn't know who I was or where I lived. Baxters owners told her not to call the police on me... I could go on for days about the stories on this street.

Where did you get that plaque? I need one of those!! I need one by tomorrow... DH is out of town & I need that hanging in the garage when he gets back. He would freak out if he saw that... haha_smiley

I wish I remembered! Its just a cheap little painted metal thing. If you were crafty...

BTW: One of my friends fosters for the local humane society - which ours does all in-house fosters - there is no building. Although she technically isn't a cat foster, because they were inundated, she has about 8 cats at her house. She's got a nice room with some windows that face out to bird feeders, trees, ...and the street. One of her neighbors called animal control on her and complained that she had cats in cages at her house [actually they are large dog crates, imaculate, litter boxes - scooped 3x more often than mine, food & water, and a little perch to sit on in each!] The guys at animal control got a good chuckle out of that, since they all knew her!

I'm so far behind on reading posts, but Jenn, I loved your sweet Baxter story. I hope you have many happy years left with him. He's lucky to have found you.

Jenn, what a great story about how Baxter "chose you". You are a great mom to him and I've no doubt his previous owners would not have taken the time and commitment to treat his FD.
Enjoy Baxter and don't go by his age, go by how he is feeling and enjoying life.
Is Baxter a Himy or a Ragdoll? He looks a lot like my seal point Ragdoll, Kokamo.
