Oscar started drooling from the corner of his mouth

Hi everyone!

This just started and I don't know what to make of it! Oscar has started drooling from the side of his mouth. It is very worrying to me. What could this be and why? Should I be worried? It is drool that hangs from the side of his mouth, once or twice a day (it's been 2-3 days now), and I also saw it in the morning on the sheet where he had been sleeping. His breath is also quite bad nowadays.

Oscar is a stray rescue, which complicates things because I don't know how old he is or what he has been eating all his life... He has been abused by someone (a human), abandoned (or he ran away) and when he was found he had just been badly beaten up by some street cats. He was not castrated. His heart was beating so fast, he was so scared, that the vet just said, "He will have a heart attack anyway, let's just put him to sleep." We don't know how long he's been on the streets but from his behavior we reckon it's been a while. I'd say any of these events could have been stressful enough to cause this? He has also clearly been deprived of food; in the beginning he ate hiding under furniture, then ate like he would never get to see food again, and always looking over his shoulder. Now he's calmed down, but he never leaves anything in the bowl. He is at least 8-10 years old, maybe older (as per 2 different vets), and he is also FIV positive.

He's been with me since July and he had a crisis in August which is when I found out he is diabetic. A week to ten days before, a vet had told me he was "clinically fine" though he is FIV and had severe gastro intestinal problems. The emergency vet I took him to when he had a crisis (I thought he was dying, but now I think he was going into a coma. His cute pink nose was turning grey) is now not happy with me because I refuse the food they proposed he must eat for the rest of his life (hard food, with almost 20% carbs). I give him 2 units of insulin twice per day, 12 hours apart. He eats a lot, drinks a lot, goes to the gents a lot and he sleeps a lot. When he first moved in, he slept sitting up, so I don't know if he's just making up for lost sleep (he was always on his guard).

It got really cold in Paris, all of a sudden. Coinciding with his drooling. Could he just be cold? Have a cold?

It's been raining too. He gets very anxious when it is raining. As if it reminds him of being cold and wet on the streets :( He doesn't want me to leave the house when it rains, but I obviously have to go to work. In general, he doesn't like me to leave the house, I think he is worried about being abandoned. But when it rains he is more stressed, for some reason.

Please let me know your thought!

Best regards,

Jenny

Could he possibly have a bad tooth? That can often cause drooling.

I'm so glad you rescued Oscar from what sounds like a really horrible life on the streets. :cat:

Welcome Jenny and Oscar....poor boy but he's got a good life now! :)

It sure sounds like a tooth infection which could even be causing those high numbers. I'd seriously have him really checked carefully for teeth that need removed. Those are fairly classic signs. When you have the dental work done, the numbers may all return to normal. Be sure there's a round of strong antibiotics to kill any infection that may be set in hard.

HUGS!

I agree that it sounds like a tooth or gums issue-getting that fixed up can not only lower his BG but change his whole demeanor (for the better) as it can be quite uncomfortable and they hide pain so well especially the street tough guys
It sounds like you need to find a skilled compassionate vet who is interested in making Oscars life better and not throwing in the towel!!
Having FIV makes it especially important to avoid infection, of course a full blood panel will be needed to be sure he can tolerate anesthesia -and a vet who understands diabetes.
Some of these vets make me so mad:banghead:
You are a beautiful soul for taking in this baby and providing a good life for him…. best of luck to you and Oscar :)

Hi Jenny, and welcome to you and Monsieur Oscar.

When he first moved in, he slept sitting up, so I don't know if he's just making up for lost sleep (he was always on his guard).
That sounds like PTSD. (I have it.) He must have had a really tough time. :( I'm so glad he found you to love and care for him. Seven blessings on you for rescuing him and giving him a loving, safe home.

I hope you find out what's making Oscar drool and that he feels much better soon.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your help! Oscar doesn't have very many teeth left :( I was told it could be due to either a "fall", or abuse. So yes it could def be a teeth/gums issue. We did have his teeth & gums checked up on, but that was by the same doctor who told me Oscar was "clinically fine" right before he had the attack...

Yes, indeed, finding a "skilled compassionate vet" seems key, and one who also takes me seriously when it comes to his food. So far not much luck with that part. He's been to 4 different offices. One, when I first got him, said he was too ugly to ever be adopted (but he's so handsome!!!), "so you are probably stuck with him". Two of them also told me he was an unnecessary "investment" (= waste of money...).

Since he had to stay 4 days at the hospital to "stabilize" his insulin, he has refused to leave the house. I can't get him into the little cage for another visit. He just pretends to fall asleep on my feet until I don't have the heart to try to make him get in there anymore. Such an actor...

Hi Jenny,

He just pretends to fall asleep on my feet until I don't have the heart to try to make him get in there anymore.
It sounds like the two of you have a wonderfully close and loving relationship. :cat:

Oscar looks very handsome to me. That vet's taste must all be in his mouth. The other two sound like people who know the price of everything but the value of nothing.

I note from your latest post that most of Oscar's teeth are gone. This is just brainstorming here, but I wonder whether it would be worth getting an X-ray done to see whether there are any tooth fragments left in his gums that might be causing a problem?

Great idea!

Very well-said, Mogs, I agree 100%!

Jenny, it's beyond outrageous that any vet should ever say things like this to a client! It really appalls me to hear this type of thing. Oscar is very handsome, and no cat is ever an "unnecessary investment"!

Ok Jenny, you go and find a human being to be your vet. You and your babies don't need cold-hearted villans like that in your life. They are a disgrace to their profession! RUN, do not walk away from them.

And yes, it does sound like Oscar has some tooth fragments still in his mouth. Or perhaps an infected ear? He may also have arthritis, or a mouth ulcer.

He did have an ear infection that was treated for 10 days with a saline solution then a cream, which wasn't the easiest to administer because he is like a mini bull; 10 kg muscle pack... And yes he def has arthritis, sometimes he moves like a little old man. Could that be the cause of the drooling? Could that be made worse by the rain? Since our bones can ache more with the humidity on cold rainy days, that would make sense. Which would also explain his more anxious behavior on rainy days. Paris gets very cold & humid on days like that. It stopped raining, and he stopped drooling. He is def feeling better because he did his evening exercise routine last night and this evening (he gets in under the bed then shoots out like a canon ball, so funny...) ;) I will continue searching for a good doctor for him and when I find one will look more into his mouth for any tooth fragments/ulcer

Hi Jenny,

I think you could well be onto something about the arthritis and the weather. Also, when cats are in pain I think they feel very vulnerable (hence hiding behaviour at times when they're not doing so good). Could help to keep a little diary for Oscar to see if you can spot any other patterns.

I'm glad Oscar's feeling better today, and I'm sending good wishes for you to find a really good - and compassionate! - vet.

My Bubba started drooling a few years ago when I would comb him. I wasn't sure what to think of it either. Recently, in September, he did have 2 bad teeth that needed extracted. However, since then, he still drools when I go to test him because he knows he is going to get a poke treat. So my question to you is to notice when it happens and if he checks out with the vet for dental, it could be that he is stimulated in some way. Just a thought, don't know for sure.

Here is something I found online: http://www.canidae.com/blog/2012/06/why-do-cats-drool-when-theyre-happy.html It goes on to say:

Firstly, if your cat has never drooled and suddenly starts, there may be a problem with their teeth or the inside of their mouth. You should have your vet check your cat’s mouth for ulcers, tooth damage or periodontal disease. If your vet finds that your cat’s mouth is normal and there’s no medical reason for the waterworks – congratulations! You have yourself what is called a “happy drooler.”

Have him checked out and if everything is good, then he is a "happy drooler"

Hahaha well he certainly seems happy in many other aspects, maybe he was extra happy to be indoors in the cold rain winter rain (as that's when the drooling took place) ;) He was checked for dental previously. Will keep notes

You could get lost in those eyes! :cat:

Lovely pic of Oscar. Thank you for sharing it with us, Jenny. :) I also love the way he's snuggled up to your hand in your avatar pic. Is he a bit of a lovebug?

That's how he looks at me in the morning when I'm about to go to work. Obviously, leaving the house is a bit difficult.. ;) Yes, he snuggles me all the time the little lovebug <3

He looks just like my civvie Vinnie! (I'd show you his pic but I'm using a borrowed laptop, my pics aren't here) My Vinnie is a real lovebug, too. My former vet told me that she thought black and white cats were always real sweethearts, and I have to agree!

Hi Jenny just in case you are still looking for a vet in Paris - I did some checking and here is a Parisian vet who trained in feline medicine in the US and works with feline practitioners in the US - she comes highly recommended - Michelle Fermé-Fradin. 85 ter Bd Soult 75012 Paris, FRANCE
