HI to All,
Sue and Oliver suggested I post this group as I have just started on Lantus and have had a rocky couple of day. Oscar started on 3u and dived after several cutbacks and yesterday honey etc he was still quite low last night so I didn't dose. This morning he is now due for a shot and I am not sure how much? He has tested at 331.2 and has had something to eat but not sure what next?
Please Help!
Cheers Joan (Aus)

Welcome to Lantus Land!

A couple of questions...
What insulin were you using prior to Lantus?
How was the decision made to start Oscar on 3.0u?
Are there any medical issues like ketones.

quick sum -- he was in the lowlands last night (day 3 of lantus) . Joan changed diet same time as switching to lantus. he has been testing green on spot checks since starting .
she said she was still feeding dry to keep his numbers up. (ETA--she did lower dose couple times already)
she has a ss.

I suggested she skip this am ( her pm shot) and try a food trial. imho, w/o the dry he may not need insulin or he will probably be a low dose kitty.

please read thread on health

eta-- no hx of ketones
was on C.I.

HI All,
Cheryl I didn't leave dry food out last night as he didn't eat the raw meat and tuna put down at tea, I really think constipation is making him feel a little low. He has eaten a little this morning (no dry). Sienne he was on Caninsulin until last Thursday night our time. THe vet suggested 3u to start as that was in protocol for Lantus he is 6kg (a little over 12 pound I guess) I spoke to vet Friday and we went down to 2u but since then I went down to 1.5 as he was still dropping, then no dose last time and we are ready for next dose now. No ketones evident so far. Thanks JOan

do you have anything on had that could help his constipation? ( that can contribute to higher numbers)
and if he is not eating well that makes shooting/dosing more questionable.

here is a post on remedies and information on constipation.

I know being out in the boonies you might not have access. you could mix olive oil in his food, use some furball remedy ( be care as many are high in sugar -- look at label)
plain vaseline can also help for short term .

ed --typo verra tired

I would try a smaller dose. The protocol we use here would have had Oscar's starting dose at 1.5 units, but since that is taking him low then I would try 1 unit or even less. With a food change, that might be all he needs.

Your vet's calculations are off. For a 6 kg cat, 1.5u would be the starting dose (dose = 0.25 x ideal weight in kg). I'm thinking along the same lines as Libby -- no more than 1.0u.

Due to not eating much I will try him on .5u and put down fresh meat with some cod liver oil on it to help tummy and see how he goes. Don't want another day like yesterday. HOpefully that sounds OK?
Cheers Joan

sounds good. Then you will want to hold that dose for the next several days, unless Oscar goes too low on it. You can post here daily if you want, so we can help you keep an eye on his numbers. Welcome!

agree with libby sounds like a good decision.

maybe in the next few days you will have a chance to really dive into those stickys at the top of the page we talked about ;-) oh and Oscar's profile too

if he has continued issues w/ constipation , I would start a thread over on health regarding that.
I hope things get moving and his tummy feels better.

look forward to see what happens next in Oscar's story !
best-

Raw is a great way to feed, but if you use just meat you do need to add supplements, especially calcium and taurine. It is safe to supplement canned food with up to 15% plain meat a day. I use a powdered all in one supplement, but I don't know if you can get it in Australia.

The Miralax works well for constipation, I give it to Tess every day. Again what is available to you will probably not be the sme name, the active ingredient is Polyethylene Glycol 3350.

Welcome to Lantus Land!

How do you know how much taurine and calcium to give the cat? I gather you can give them too much. Are we Aussies meant to buy supplements on line from the US - we don't seem to do any products of this nature here!? My vet told me a taurine deficiency takes years to manifest itself. I respect my vet but I know they don't know everything.

Hi,
Just to let you all know I had to go out for a few hours today - left the men in charge. Oscar just tested 151 at the 7hour since shot mark certainly gives hope!
Cheers Joan :-D

looks great joan.

remember it takes time for the dose to settle. so no dose changes for few days and then time to re-evaluate.
Happy to hear your back up crew did such a great job :-D It must give you peace of mind to know they are able to help out.

eta-- how's his appy ? tummy better? things moving through?
---

anyname(marilyn?) --- would be a great idea to start a thread on health about homemade diet and supplements !
( including the challenges of getting what you need in Australia )

But joan, the $64,000 question..... what did you give Oscar this morning? How much Lantus?

Cheryl, I think you suggestion reasonable.

Ah! Girls the dose was .5u I truly erred on the side of caution. The guys are good but not that attentive. I will keep at .5u for 3 days unless things go wrong then come to the Lantus board. His tummy is still not great hence the lack of appetite but he is eating a little at a time - kidneys are one of his favs. and I thought they might be less binding??? (Also added oil) He justs looks a bit depressed! Later once I get insulin and food sorted I will have to work out teeth as the dry food always solved that problem?
I will post again later as he is having something to eat now and I will test before shot. Yes Cheryl I have learnt.
Good idea about working out food, but I will also get some FF when I go down Tuesday to try as well.
Talk soon,
Joan

hope he feels better soon. maybe you can pick up some miralax or the equiv for austraila when you go to town?

i think your dose of .5 was a very good decision with all factor considering.

Later once I get insulin and food sorted I will have to work out teeth as the dry food always solved that problem?

actually, dry food as good for teeth is myth.
some on board use giblets -- heart and such raw as extra chewy treats to give gums and teeth a good work out.
does he have dental issues?

just a little FYI about posting here in Lantus land.

a new thread or *condo* should be started for every day.
in the header put the date. kitty's name and PS number --- AMPS for morning and PMPS for evening.
you can edit the header throughout the day to add numbers.
more numbers ( curves and such ) that you want looked at can also be in body of post esp if you are looking to ask about specific patterns for the day --- of course this will all be in your spreadsheet too as you update that.
IF you have another trip to the lowlands or other emergency. put the 911 label in the header and then remove it when emergency over.

in the body of the post -- put a link to the previous day's thread
and give a WCR ( Whole Cat Report) --- how your kitty is feeling/acting.
and any special concerns/ questions.
feeding questions and other health questions related to current dosing ok.
otherwise health questions , including nutrition and such get posted on health -- that way more members will see and be able to share their experiences and it keeps LL on topic and prevent it from getting too clogged up
of course you can put a link in your condo to any topic you might start on health if you want.

click on a few other *condos* to see examples.

so for your next PS and shot time, perhaps start new thread? Is a little confusing as it is now the 12th here , and this is yesterdays thread the 11th. but I know you guys might be on a different day and your pmps might be our amps. that's ok !!
you can start with pmps for the day and end with amps on your posts if you want to stick with the american days and keep your days and nights the same as you have them or ?? post your date and am and pm---whatever makes it easiest and most sense for you !! we have other aussie members... can't remember how they do it.
gee that was confusing LOL . I'm sure you'll figure it out
