He is often lower than 200 and I have to skip his dose which makes him very high at the next dosage time. These ups and downs cannot be good. Should I decrease his dosage? From 2 units to maybe 1.75 or 1.5? Or should I just bite it and get him on a different insulin? I hear that lantus is known for getting kitties into remission. Has anyone had issues like this and switched and had good results? Or should I just keep with it and lower dosage for a couple of weeks to see if it helps?

you could try 1.75. If you get a blue preshot number try stalling for up to an hour to see if the number is going up. Sometimes you could just be getting longer duration out of the insulin. Also super helpful would be more mid cycle readings. If you work during the day try to get a before bed reading, then t test mid cycle on weekends or days off. You want to see how low your kitty is going during the day. :)

Hi Kelly and welcome!

when you have a moment, would you please set up your signature and add the link to the ss in there? Here are the instructions, it makes easier for members to see the important details about your cat at a glance :cat:

Make sure your signature is up-to-date.
  • On the left, under Settings, Click on Signature. This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback.
    • There is a limit of two lines which may include two links; you may separate pieces with commas, dashes, | etc. This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
    • Add any other text, such as
    • Caregiver & kitty's name (optional)
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

Thank you!

You will have to be careful with Lantus. You should look at some of the SS from the Lantus forum. It's harder to control and its a big no for me because i live alone and can't monitor my cat's BG when i am at work. Don't pick an insulin for a chance of remission. Pick one that suit your lifestyle so you can have a routine. Prozinc is actually good for remission.

Please don't dissuade people from Lantus just because you don't like it. I don't know why you're claiming it's harder to control; on the contrary, it puts most cats' blood glucose levels in steadier, lower numbers which is what we want. Many people live alone and work 12 hr shifts and still use Lantus. As I pointed out in another thread where you insisted Lantus was more dangerous, any insulin has the potential for hypo events.

And I think it's fair to say remission for any member is better for their lifestyle overall.

Kelly, what protocol method are you following? As you get more data, you will lower the no-shoot number. Eventually you will want to shoot low to stay low.

Lantus is a great insulin if you want to switch; I switched from Prozinc to Lantus because Prozinc wasn't keeping her low enough and had fabulous results. Before you consider making a switch though I think you need to focus on following a protocol and getting more tests in if you are able with your schedule. We don't have a lot of mid-cycle data to go by.
