Dallas was put on this on Tuesday. His platelet levels are very low - on 9/12 they were 58, on 9/19 they were 36. I am at work, but pretty sure this is what the vet has put him on:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doxycycline

Most of the time, I have been giving it to him first then feeding him 1 hour later, as instructions say take 1 hour before or 2 hours after food.

he threw it up this am after about 15 minutes.

Any tips are appreciated if youhave used this before. I am waiting for the vet to call back later this am.

Dallas has little tolerance for the new kitten right now, and I am at the end of my rope with him, after he decided to get himself stuck in the unused space under the kitchen cabinets last night. I was at my wits end trying to figure out how to get him out of the tiny space he squeezed into when he was finally able to get himself out. I hugged him and immediately put him to bed. I couldn't sleep however! Now blocked with boxes he can't move (he's in his room while I am at work) and will rig up more protection tonight....sigh. Send me healing vines for Dallas and patience for myself!

Doxycycline is potent antibiotic. If you give pills make sure that you chase it with water or food. If it gets stuck in esophagus it can cause erosion.
Like other antibiotics, it too can cause GI upset

As Larry said, Doxy is a potent antibiotic. It will knock out lots of different things tho' - I've used it fairly often with my dogs but only with 1 of my kitties. It does cause stomach upset unless given with food and plenty of water. It seems to make them more thirsty too....

HUGS Jesse - kittens make old people gray... Monkeyboy spends more time in his large crate than out as he tends to get aggressive when he's hungry...which is about all the time. He's now about 5 months old and just beginning to settle down some. Pepper and Lily ran from him for the first couple of months, now Pepper just puts her foot on his head, pushes him down and hisses at him. He leaves her alone now - Lily is learning to hiss at him without running. He just loves to chase her when she runs. He'll throw himself up walls if she jumps where he can't yet get...

Its a liquid, and it sounds like he prescribed liquid so it won't get stuck.
It does say to take on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after food. I can do the 2 hours after at night but not most mornings, especially Sunday, when I am up at 3am to go to work (off Saturday to visit a friend).

I have some cerenia that was cedric's and is still good, so they have ok'd that for a couple of days. I think he is getting a little aggravated with the kitten, who does become bothersome when trying to get meals ready for them....

The cerenia has helped. My problem is I can't get the darn liquid out of the syringe. It's a green, sticky gross glop. He takes it like a champ, when I can get the plunger to shoot the liquid down his throat....I tried a dropper tonight with a little better luck.

Anyone have tips for this liquid? He's supposed to take it for 3 weeks!

Ask the vet if it can be dilute in a syringe, or if there is an alternative form that may be given.

are you shaking the doxy? It may have separated in the bottle if it was compounded in to a liquid. We have used it for foster cats with nasty upper respiratory infections. We give the doxy and follow with another syringe full of water to flush the mouth & throat.

Yep, been shaking it then trying to get it in the syringe or dropper. It seems like maybe the syringe works once good then not so good, even though I clean it. Can I buy these syringes at the pharmacy?

Oral syringes can be found at pharmacies for dosing children. With no needle, it may not require a prescription.

I found some droppers at CVS that I think will work. I won't get an exact does, but haven't been doing so great with the syringe the pharmacy gave me with the meds anyway. Dallas is being a champ, such of good boy. He was a little cranky with Ace (new kitten this am) at least until breakfast.
