Why would a cat who, on the border of remission, suddenly decide after nearly 5 years without kibble that it is now the ONLY food he will eat?
After weeks of declining appetite I finally broke out the dry and he is eatting it.
A few hours ago I sprayed his eatting area with feliway. Thinking it would be a more calming and relaxing area for him.
I am at a loss....
Since he seems to feel well, the best I can describe it would be like anorexia.
Vet visit in order I know.
Just looking for others who may have been thru this.

Have you tried pepcid on the off chance that his tummy is feeling off? I'm just trying to think of anything here.......

I know Nancy....I was getting so excited by his great numbers and now all I want is to see him eat...I don't even care anymore about numbers. Just one meal...I just want to watch him eat one meal.
I'm starting to get worried as this is brand new for us...and never before seen on Tom.

Lori, I'm surprised you didn't know about Pepcid. FWIW, remember it has to be Pepcid A/C only and you may have to do a search for the 10 mg box and have a pill cutter available.

Do you have any appetite stimulants? any good smelly stuff? tuna? would he let you syringe some baby food in him? He needs to go to the vet .....

Hope, Tom has never needed any tummy medicine...I guess I did'nt pay much attention to what other kitties got under those circumstances.

Nancy I've tried everything. He may take a bite or 3 but then he walks away.
Sometimes he approaches his bowl like he's afraid to see what's in it???? really weird. Like he stalks the plate, sniffs, walks away.
Please Tom...Please be ok.
And no Hope, he is not. I know he is not.

I've had a few of mine react this way after they essentially got kitty food poisoning, or something similiar. If they ate something that disagreed with them - regardless of if it was moist food, dry food, mouse, carpet fluff, centipede etc... they just view all food with suspicion. I'm not sure if its that they're still queasy or what, but kibble is usually the first thing they want to eat again. Its a bit like wanting saltines and toast if you've been sick. The numbers are always important, but getting them to eat AT ALL trumps. Iams has some lower carb kibbles (25%), as does I think Fancy Feast. Lower, not low (obviously). You could also try offering him some boiled chicken if he likes table scraps. When I needed to fatten Yittle up while he was still not regulated we ended up feeding him boneless skinless chicken thighs sauteed in olive oil or bacon fat. He couldn't resist them, even when he was stuffed and wouldn't eat more cat food.

I did post in your thread over at community that I used to feed Midora cooked chicken breast.
If you are going to give him dry, I'd go with the blue buffalo Wilderness, since it's grain free, high protien & low carb. I know they sell it at Pet Smart and Pet Supermarket.
Still praying for you. :YMHUG:

lori, is he eating nothing or just eating less than normal? i ask because since the temps have climbed above 90 out here, my cats are eating much less than usual

As of this morning nothing since a few kibbles yesterday sometime.
I ran to see if he ate the food I left out last night.
No.
He's outside now...wandering. He dug a big hole to poo in, gave a small deposit OUTSSIDE the hole and then buried the hole.....sad. I think he is confused. I think my heart is breaking.
I will try all of the above suggestions. cooking.
Cindy, it has not been hot here. actually on in the 70's.

Lori, can you syringe feed him? He needs to go to the vet, something is off. I know you don't like the vet but he needs to be checked out, today.

Hi Lori,

I'm so sorry to read these threads about Tom's lack of appetite. I can totally relate to how you feel about just wanting to see him eat something, ANYTHING, on his own and without needing to be coaxed. I've been through two serious pancreatitis/IBD attacks with Harley and it's gut wrenching and heartbreaking to watch them and feel so powerless when everything you are trying doesn't seem to be working. Time and time again, Harley would approach the food bowl, and either sniff and walk away or lick his lips (a sign of nausea) and walk away. Finally he stopped coming for food and hid in a closet with his face to the back wall. I spent whole days planning what buffet of various foods I was going to try and tempt him with. Most of them went uneaten. And if he did eat one, one time, he would definitly not want to eat it a second time. Only when I finally convinced my vet to prescribe anti-nausea meds. (we had a confirmed pancreatits diagnosis by then) did the tide start to turn. And during this time, I fed dry food, Temptations treats, sardines, cottage cheese, etc. I fed anything (except chocolate and onions) that Harley would eat. When he got better, he started to be interested in his regular food again.

For Tom's sake, I agree with Nancy. It'd be best for him to go to the vet ASAP just to see whether or not there is a medical explanation for why he seems to be afraid of eating. Since Tom hates to go to the vet (and I don't blame him) is there any chance there's a vet in your area that does house calls?

Wishing you both well. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

In a word, nausea. Give him what he's willing to eat this point but get him seen by the vet. He could have an infection or other easy-to-treat problem, but you won't know what it is until you get him checked out. My other cats with nausea have acted very similarly -- they won't eat food but if you give them something new they will eat it for a while, then lose interest in it until you give something else. Treating nausea is easily done, but finding out why they are nauseated is the first step.

Get him to the vet. The declining interest in eating and dropping BGs worry me, get to the vet.

I agree. I went through that with Spot and it turned out that she had cancer. Hopefully it is not anything like that, but he does need to be checked.

Also, occassionally my cats get very picky about their wet foods and won't eat it. I found that if I take a small handful of dry food and place it on top of the wet food, they will eat all of it. I feed mine Friskies and I really think that they have been making changes to their flavors. I noticed that my cats are turning their noses up to it more frequently and also the texture in the cans seems to have changed too. Just a thought.

I've noticed that with Friskies as well Lisa. My kittens won't touch it and my older girls won't eat much before they walk away. I have tons of in my drawer and just don't bother trying to feed it anymore.

I couldn't bring myself to say the c word. The appetite spiral is what we saw in Peanut right at the end and I have seen it repeated that the c word will bring down BGs. Major prayers that Tom is just feeling contrary because he's a boy he will be right as rain after a trip to the vet.
