Simon goes to the vet tomorrow morning at 8:15 for his first post diagnosis check up. They asked me to skip his shot and also no food. He usually gets his ear stick at 5:30 and his breakfast right after that. His shot is at 6:30 as I make sure he eats enough first. It is going to be a loooooong morning cause he is going to be hungry. ohmygod_smile

My question is do you think I can give him an extra little bit of food later tonight before taking it up when we go to bed? Or would that be counter productive to getting a true reading of a fasting blood sugar? confused_cat

I am just going to be so sad watching Simon looking for his bowl as it has been such a tough week for him

Come to think of it, no, they did not tell me why and I didn't ask. I guess to see how his BS is doing. They assumed I would not be doing home checks when they set the appointment up last week when he got his first shot of insulin. Not sure why it has to be a fasting BS but this is the instructions.

I can understand why you don't want to question your vet, but I don't see the need for a fasting test. You know he is diabetic, you have numbers over a couple days at different times. Food doesn't impact numbers if you wait for 2 hours to take the test.

Do they know you are testing at home? Maybe offer to send them a copy of the spreadsheet and skip the appointment (if that is all they are going to do) since if he is stressed at all, his numbers will be inflated. Your numbers are more accurate.

It is good to compare your meter with theirs, but that doesn't need a fasting test.

MHO, worth only what you are paying for it. :-D

when you made this appointment, was it so they could follow up and check his bg after being on it for two weeks?

if that was - then as Sue said, you are honestly wasting your time and money to let them take one test and determine his diabetic status that way. since u are home testing, you have more relevant data than one stressed induced test at the vet's office. if they want to do a fructosamine test - as that captures the average bg levels for the past two weeks, again fasting unnecessary and your home test data will give the same info.

personally, I would call the vet in the am and cancel/reschedule based on the purpose for the visit.
