So, is anyone else running into this problem that the prices have gone up so much? My Gabby went on Lantus back in November and I was able to use a downloaded coupon and get the 5 pack of pens for around $160. Now, I called back to get a refill and the pharmacy tells me that the price has increased and now I can no longer use my discount because the rules have changed and now they have to enter an NPI (National Provider ID number) and vets don't have them. Now that same pack of pens is going to cost me over $300. I just cannot afford it. She has been doing so well on it and she will be running out soon. I can't figure out what to do. What do you guys do to meet your kitties' needs without bankrupting yourselves?
Thanks so much in advance for any ideas.

You might try checking Craigslist.

You could check this coupon search for Lantus coupons to see if there are any other ways to save money, ex prescription savings plans, etc.

Re: OMG, Solostar pens so expensive now! Don't know what to

i saw 75 % off coupons, i dont know if the new rule applies but heres some links, Loki just got diagnosed, so i am shopping, he crashed on his first dose of Novastuff, last night so i am looking into options. I have no idea if this is good or not, let me know!

Gosh, the price on this is incredible! Almost too good to be true. Has anyone used Northwest Pharmacy in Canada and/or this Lantus pen device that they are selling? I just called them and the lady was very nice but unable to answer many of my questions, so she wrote them down and she will have to ask a manager tomorrow and call me back. Only bad thing is she said it can take 3 days to process and up to 18 business days to ship and I won't be able to wait that long b/c Gabby will be out of insulin soon. Thanks, JettCat for this! If it works, this will be a great find.

Already checked with a couple of different pharmacies and they say the same thing. Also called the phone number on the Lantus coupon and the lady had an attitude with me saying that the pharmacy should have never processed the discount the first time and that the medication wasn't meant for animal use and if the pharmacy were audited they could ask for the money back that they discounted off of my first prescription they filled.

Re: OMG, Solostar pens so expensive now! Don't know what to

That is ridiculous! Thank you so much Obamacare.

Well- so you know it is true if more than one pharmacy does it. Have you checked over in health or the supply closet to see if anyone else has run into this problem? (or found a solution?)

Otherwise-
1- are there any Lantus users near you that you can split a pack with? How long does a pen last for Gabby? If you bought a pack in November a pen lasts a long time.

2- Do you know an insulin user who doesn't use their supply of insulin before they get a refill at the first of the month? I know a few people who rely on the last 10 or 20 units of a donated (and well kept) pen to bypass the necessity of purchasing on their own. That is one of the first things I did when I found out Sneakers was going to be a high dose kitty- look for those who needed insulin. I never found a Lev user but I do know a Lan user so if you can't find one PM me as he sometimes does have a pen left over.

How far are you from Canada?
Have you got a passport?

Some folks send the Rx to Canada for filling less expensively.

See this post in Feline Health. Insulin from Canadian pharmacies

Re: OMG, Solostar pens so expensive now! Don't know what to

I don't know if you can get Lantus in Candada.
I by Lev on line from there but I've not seen any Lantus available when I looked it up.

Re: OMG, Solostar pens so expensive now! Don't know what to

Got this from Ventia when I asked her about it-

Depends on how hard one searches for the Lantus.
http://www.77canadapharmacy.com/lantus/
has a box of Lantus pens sourced from Turkey for $125 plus shipping. No prescription required.

So you can get them from Canada. While I haven't used this particular site (I will when I run out of Lev again and need to order- I do it by 3 or 5 packs at a time) there have been others on the acro site who have and say they are very reputable. I have gotten Lev from Turkey (via Canada) before and it was great for Sneakers. They pack the container very well with plenty of cooling stuff. It does take 2-3 weeks to get to you so bear that in mind.

Re: OMG, Solostar pens so expensive now! Don't know what to

I am headed to Costco this weekend to get five pens. They seem to be cheaper there than my pharmacy which charges $330. I could send one to you if I can figure out how to package it properly. Anyway, I would be willing to split mine with you. I want Gabby to keep doing well. Let me know.

Re: OMG, Solostar pens so expensive now! Don't know what to

Ok - thanks. I have printed them out in case my offer is accepted.

Thanks Deb.

I am getting my next set of pens for $198.15 plus shipping from 77canadapharmacy.com

No need for a prescription. Just ordered online.

Re: OMG, Solostar pens so expensive now! Don't know what to

I'm in Buffalo and went to Canada this weekend for Lantus. I buy the vial--I walked in to Shoppers Drug mart and you DO NOT need a prescription and bought Lantus. I even brought my box from Heff's originial script to compare and it's identical.

My price in Canadian Funds was $76.99 and it translated in to $68.88 in US dollars.

I almost hugged the pharmacist. Seriously, I don't think I've ever been so happy to save $150 in my life!

Re: OMG, Solostar pens so expensive now! Don't know what to

Good to know about the online options via Canada. Robin, let us know how it all works once the insulin arrives. I ran into the same issue as Gabby&Cy's Mom. Back in December, when my kitty went on Lantus, I signed up for and printed the coupon for the $25 program, but when the pharmacist went to process it, it wouldn't work without an NPI number. Vet no longer able to have an NPI number, so I ended up paying full price, $365. Ouch!

Re: OMG, Solostar pens so expensive now! Don't know what to

Oh dear... Holly, $365 is so very expensive. My first set of pens were purchased from Costco and I was only able to use the coupons because of the very crafty pharmacist who bent over backwards to set Alska up as my 18 year old son. It still cost me $225. I will let you know how the Canadian connection fares. It was recommended by another member who got hers within five days and has had no problems with it.
