Before you panic and read on apparently it's an Australian only issue but I would be cautious anyway. If anyone has been following my thread on me being cranky with the BFF manufacturers - there was a news story on the national news tonight apparently there a cats dropping dead all over the place in Australia - suggested neurological problems and facebook is suggesting liver problems - from feeding BFF. Weruva have recalled but aren't willing to give ANY information about what the problem is. I'm so scared for Myrtle that I can't stop shaking. I haven't fed her huge amounts and mainly mixed in a tablespoon or so with her normal food but still.... She's been very sleepy today and didn't eat all her dinner but she wanted some of my lamb that I was having for dinner so I decided that I would give her a treat and let her have some - I wanted to make sure she is eating. I don't know how long I need to worry for - would she show immediate problems? would it take a while? With no info it's hard to guess:arghh:

Are you still giving her some of the BFF? If so, I'd stop. Contact the manufacturer to see how to get a refund.

Yes, I stopped the BFF and got a refund but I'm not really concerned about the few dollars. It looks like a lot of kitties are sick, the distributor in Australia is Petbarn and the stories on their facebook page are enough to make your hair curl https://www.facebook.com/petbarn/ . They don't really know what's going on suggesting mercury poisoning or a virus but Weruva are just keeping quiet. There was also someone on the page from Canada suggesting that her cat may have gotten sick as well. The most frustrating thing is that they wont tell us what is going on or what to watch for!!! Weruva are making a big mistake by doing this as people are contacting media in Australia and overseas to "out" them and make them give us info.

Good you've stopped. From your post I thought you were still feeding a small amount! Have you spoken to your vet? Maybe they know what cats are dieing from, or could check around with other vets?

Today was Sunday (now Sunday night) and most vets were closed today. I did call my local Animal Emergency and they didn't know anything. I also tryed phoning the main and most respected animal hospital in the state which I live which was also mentioned on the news - I think had their phone lines going into meltdown - I was put on hold for about 30 minutes and then I gave up. they were probably also low staffed on a Sunday night and dealing with sick animals so I'm just watching Myrtle like a hawk.

Since according to their website all Weruva cat foods are made in Thailand I would be VERY leery using any of their products in any country. If one country is affected then why wouldn't other countries possibly be as well since they are all made in the same plants.

Where is Weruva Cat Food Made?
The Weruva Company was founded by husband and wife pair David and Stacie Forman who set out to create a high-quality homemade diet for their cats. The name of this brand is an amalgamation of their rescued cats’ names – Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa. Though the company began with a line of cat food products, it has since expanded to include dog food products as well. Today, the Weruva Company is headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts and all of their products are manufactured in human-grade facilities located in Thailand."

I would hazard a guess that there may be problems with the vitamin premix which is used in all commercial kitty food. Also why does Weruva not have something listed on this link, since this is supposed to be the page with information about recalls????? The fact that the company is not forthcoming about the potential problem is very upsetting, since vets con't know what they are supposed to be treating.

Wow! This us really scary. David was one of the first to list all numbers including phosphorus in his site. Sad to hear animals are dying.

@Tuxedo Mom what makes you think it's the vitamin mix in all commercial foods? That would mean cats eating so many foods would be impacted.

MOST Commercial pet foods use vitamin mix in the preparation of their pet food, since after the processing there is very little nutritional value left in the "meat mash". Not all commercial pet food companies get it from the same suppliers and not all vitamin premixes are the same in all foods. Some prepared pet foods will contain extra vitamins/minerals as per their proprietary recipes so many of the premixes are done specifically for each company. Many of the problems in the past where recalls have been done was because of an improper balancing ( lack of or too much) of certain nutrients. so I am just "thinking out loud" that that may be the problem or part of the problem.

ETA That is why even people who do home-made either cooked or raw still need to add some vitamin preparation such as Alnutrin or EZ Complete when preparing home made food.

I'm so sorry for your worry. It's totally understandable. I hope the company will get some answers soon and will let everyone know what's going on! BTW, I feed Uncle Weruva as well. I think of them as one of the better companies out there. :(
I was just reading in Taffy's post last night how some vet's are completely against making and feeding raw foods at home because they don't think it's safe. Pretty ironic.
Keeping you and Myrtle in my thoughts. Please keep us updated :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I found this statement from Weruva on the BFF website.

  • Dear Valued Best Feline Friend (BFF) Customers:

As a family owned company with passion and commitment to producing nutritious and premium quality pet foods, all concerns are met with our fullest attention. In order to maintain the highest quality transparency and communication, we are issuing this notice regarding a matter still developing:

We have recently been made aware of select Best Feline Friend (BFF) canned foods, exclusive to the Australian market, which may have been produced outside of intended formulation guidelines. Out of an abundance of caution, and in partnership with our exclusive retailer of these goods, PETBARN, we have issued a stop sale of BFF canned foods in Australia until further notice. Our isolated facility for this exclusive BFF canned food line does not produce BFF foods for any other global market or any other Weruva branded foods.

While this matter affects no other products or markets, we are taking additional steps to ensure quality and confidence across our entire global food assortment. These efforts include aggressive testing of ingredients and finished product by independent laboratories in addition to our routine testing and quality assurance measures. We are in close communication with our partners at PETBARN and all of our production facilities and will continue to communicate updates as they become available.

    Sincerely,

    David Forman, President and Co-Founder

Oh my. Thanks, all, for alerting and sharing this important information. Feel better, Myrtle. Bump please.

I wrote an inquiry to the company yesterday ans here is their response to my email. Not a whole lot of new info, but maybe useful?

Hello Barbara,

We are aware of a small number of cats in Australia with health concerns, and we are researching any potential link to BFF canned foods unique to the Australia market. Out of an abundance of caution we have issued a Stop Sale Notice for BFF canned foods in Australia only. Once we receive test results and more information, we can quickly provide further updates. Customers outside of Australia, please be assured that all Weruva foods remain a safe choice.

Since this is a developing issue we have limited confirmed facts, and we want to keep you informed of the actions we are taking. We ask that you contact us directly at wecare@weruva.com or at 1-800-776-5262. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.

The Weruva family is here for you and your pets.

Thank you!
Weruva International
