Well, just another bad mark as far as I am concerned!
I took Ittle Sista to the vet Friday, they gave her some awful med that I posted about on Saturday.... Went Saturday to get this med in a pill form... got home she would not let me give it to her!
Come to find out, the vet gave her the wrong dosage! triple the amount she should have had! WTH????
Got my courtesy call from the tech..not even the doc that messed up.... wanting to know how she was doing??? OK...red flags here, and then was told the dosage was wrong....hello.......why didnt the damn doc. call??? he was the one that messed up
Thank gosh she could not take the pill!
What the hell now???????
I think I will report them as she could have been in alot of danger! Just makes my no trust that much worse!

Sorry but I am sooo mad, broke, frustrated and worried about this I could scream....so, I guess I am screaming!
ty for listening... time to find yet ANOTHER VET
Anyone that lives in my area that could perhaps suggest someone other than the er...yet another vet would be greatly appreciated!

When my Boo was going through The Dark Times (he tried all kinds of drugs for a couple of years), I learned that even the best vet, the best techs, the best office managers, whomever, can make mistakes. Until a mistake happens with one of our own, we humans tend to be very trusting of those whom we pay for services. That applies to providers of human care as well as for our furbaby care. Vets are mere mortals though, and mistakes happen. Thank goodness we have the this interwebs thingie today - imagine what all of our cats would have gone through 10, 20, or 30 years ago!

On the other hand, and unfortunately for you, ohbell, it doesn't sound like 'a once in a great while mistake' is what you're experiencing with this vet. Some of them really do just suck. Some of them really were at the bottom of their class at school. Some of them really shouldn't be in their profession. Somewhere, there really is the "worst" vet clinic in the country, with the 'worst' vets.

It's probably best for you to shop around for someone who's a bit more interested in helping you care for your baby!

No wonder she could not keep the medicine down. I swear I would be mad too. Since Lilly was diagnosed with diabetes I have lost all faith in my vet whatsoever and she has treated my cats for 10 years now.
She has told me to give to much insulin, talked about once a day dosing(lantus) and just made numerous mistakes and does not seem to know a thing about feline diabetes.
It also makes me mad when the vet techs call me and not the vet themselves usually after I have spent 300 or 400 dollars down there.
I hope your kitty is alright. Please keep us posted as to her condition.

Having already talked to Shelly about this I can only add you guys are way ahead of me cuz I NEVER had any faith or trust in the 4 local vets I have taken Tom too. Never! I would almost rather operate on him myself than subject him to those terrible places.
Oh, I almost forgot...he is not here....
Well, I have no faith and have been given no reason to have faith in them :YMSIGH:

For sure not trying to start a bashing but :YMSIGH: .

I have tried to call the poison control and of course it is an animal (no information)......aspca charges 65.00 for information and I cant afford it right now... Tried 2 different pharmacies and no one will help me because of it being a human med and given to an animal.... ANddddddd.... because she actually did not recieve this med (by the luck of God).... they wont answer questions either!

I guess they win again... by that I mean they arent responsible for me knowing before I talk with them WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED....oh well right???
I do not just want a refund.....I want to tell them exactly that I know what could have happened because he did not take a few extra minutes of his Saturday time and make sure they gave me the right amount....I ASK THEM 3 TIMES....ARE YOU SURE THIS IS RIGHT???? PILL SURE LOOKS REALLY BIG! Her vet told me Friday while I was there, the pill would be rather small if we did pill form..... another reason we did the compound. OH YES, THE TECH SAID, WE AREEEEEE VERRRRRY SURE! She never even questioned what (he) vet did or double check! GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

If anyone has any ideas who I could call to get some information BEFORE I call them (vet), I would appreciate it.

I just called Poison Control here in N.H., the lady I spoke with, sorry no name, said she might be able to help if she knows what kind of med, and the dosage, I did tell her it was for a cat, and a human med...

number is 1.800.222.1222

hope this helps.

tytyt very much...I will try it right now.... I think that is the number I called here tho and she said it was human med, would not really help at all!
But, I will try again

I look up drugs on Medscape. Site is free and may require registration. While it is for humans, it will inform you about uses for the drug and common side effects, which may be similar in cats.

Also, there is always the Google search where you put all the terms in the search box that are necessary - "drug name feline dose" may help you find info on cat meds.

this is what the info says:
medication: BL SMZ TMP PLAIN TAB
Common name: Bactrim
sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim
the amount the pharmacy said it was: 400/80

I was to give her 1/6 of a tab...... the vet prescribed 1/3 of a tab

I have been tooo buzy at work today to address this with poison or the vet and of course, the vet has not called me either! Imagine that!

ty for your help! ;-)

Thats what I thought, my mother has been on that for severe urinary infection. Her heart doctor cautioned her on the use of it due to the fact that its hard on the kidneys.
I can`t say I have ever heard of it being prescribed for animals before but others can chime in on that. It is a very strong human antibiotic I do know that.
That poor little cat. Thank god she could not keep it down it might have killed her. I don`t know what to say, I don`t know what I would do if it were me I would have to think about it a bit. I have been through the looking for another vet thing and I live on side of town where theres nothing and I would have to drive a good bit to get to a decent vet. All the really good vets are in another part of town here, surely not where I live.

how about contacting the drug manufacturer and explaining your issue.

also how are you to break apart a pill into a 1/6 size, let alone 1/3 and get it right each time?

that's a bit nuts.

I would also recommend sending a letter to the owner of the vet practice - as the vet you saw may just be an employee and not the owner. And send a letter to your state veterinary board and ask them to investigate this vet and issue as well. At a minimum your letter will go into the vet's file with the state.

There are also online places where you can publicly post this incident. google the vet office and I'm sure options for comments and such will come up, and good rate a vet or anything along those lines - plus the drudge report, better business bureau, even the local mayor's office may be able to help as well.

How much does Sista weight? If 11.7 pounds then 1/3 tab twice or once a day is the dose specified in Plumb's Vet Drug Manual. I specifies 30 mg/kg PO 12-24 hours. The mg is the total of the 400 plus 80
