For those of you who don't know us (looks like quite a lot!) it's been over 18 months since we started the sugar dance.
FDMB was an absolute life saver for us.

I'm British, but live in Germany and don't have a particularly good handle on the German language. That made the sugar dance even harder for us.
We went through 4 vets before going back to an english army one. They were fairly clueless too but at least I could understand them and explain my reasonings.

Sweetgrass (Kimmee) and Patti (Merlin) were absolute bricks.
The second vet hypo'd Lucky on her first insulin shot by giving her 5u! That was a very scary night.
Initially the vets wouldn't give us insulin. The first said Lucky was too fractious and thus I should PTS, do nothing or give her special food. I went with the good old DM. My lil furball was starving (I know why now!)

So moved onto 2nd vet, but they wouldn't give insulin either as said she had a heart condition. Enter cactus juice!!! Vey big on alternative medicine here.

In the meantime I found FDMB and switched Lucky to Felix (under 10% carbs). Her bg's dropped from over 400+ to around 250.

Eventually 2nd vet agreed to give Caninsulin-point blank refused Lantus/Levemir saying it was the law that we had to use caninsulin (vetsulin)
Then the hypo!

She didn't fair well. 3rd vet as she wasn't doing so good (and 2nd had said PTS) said no she had rallied and said to keep trying.

Enter army vet. They at least agreed to give me a script for Levemir.I do have to thank someone who no longer posts on the board (politics) living in Germany who gave me the translation for the script.

We then moved here and LL became our home. We formed a lot of cyber friendships that were invaluable through the highs and lows.Jojo and Jill, Dyana, Ronnie, Janice, The Heathers, Deb,Lyn are just a few. I managed to link up with Heather and Jasper (now OTJ  -TOOK THEM NEARLY 2 YEARS)AND WE CAT SAT FOR EACH OTHER FOR OUR RESPECTIVE HOLiDAYS.
i GOT lUCKY BEAUTIFULLY REGULATED AND THEN pANCREATITIS STRUCK.

This is where it went horribly wrong. The vets would not throw all the things that you should at P's at my lil furball suffered for it. Her FpLi test was off the scale 50+.They wouldn't give me sub q's. At the last minute we found another vet but I had agreed for the vets to take Lucky in for IV fluids. I was due to collect her the next day and take her to the new vets (who had agreed to support sub q's. Got the details from the German Diabetes Katzen forum).
Then I got the dreaded phone call saying Lucky had had a seizure. There was nothing I could do. We drove to the vets and I had to say goodbye to my sweet girl. I can't describe the anger and heartache. That was last September and still reduces me to tears when I think back.I miss her terribly and couldn't bring myself to get another kitty. There will never be another Lucky for me.

I have every now and then come back to pay forward all the knowledge and experience I have, particularly anyone from the UK as foods are very different and vets even less knowledgeable on the whole than USA and Canada.

However, we are now expecting a new addition to our household. :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT
I'm expecting my first baby  almost a year to the day I lost my beautiful lil furball.Funny how life works out. I know she's watching from the bridge and I will cherish the 16 years we had together. One day I will have space in my heart for a new furball, just not right now.

I think of my cyber friends and their furruies often and for those of you I don't know, I hope you make as many firm friendships as we did and have a succesful sugar dance.
Scritches to all your lovely, beautiful furballs-you are all true animal lovers. :YMHUG:

Well, congratulations, Kate! That's some news!

I well remember the cat sitting exchanges. How Lucky loved her nanners. The bond only you two could share. What you went through was truly heartbreaking.

I love that you still pay visits to FDMB, and look forward to baby news and pics. You'll always be a part of the family here.

Hi Kate,

Congratulations on your baby news! I remember you and Lucky when I first came to FD. Their are always names that stick out and yours was one to me.

I know you miss your Lucky a lot. It's a shame that you had to go from vet to vet to get her care. That must have been very hard.

It's nice that you come back to give your knowledge to others.
One thing we will never forget is being new to the sugar dance. It makes such a difference to hear from others that have been there.

This is my 2nd home too. There is a unique closeness here that is hard to find anywhre else.

Come back often and good luck with the baby.

May your baby have the temperment of your Lucky! (wait...is that a blessing or a curse? ) Just kidding of course - I know how special Lucky was and just loved your stories. Also loved the stories of Heather & Eric shooting her. We'll have to do a story day on her Rainbow Bridge Anniversary so that you can have some smiles and laughs rather than tears.

OMG, OMG, OMG! Kate I'm so happy for you :YMHUG: What great news! I hope you are feeling good(I remember those times myself, bla!) take good care of you guys ok. Will be looking periodically for updates. Hey it's no worse than cleaning a litter box I promise

I'm so happy for you :-D

Wow, Kate, I was expecting to see that you were getting a kitten or something. A BABY???? Congratulations!!! Lucky knew that just any old kitty could not fill the void that she left, so she had to send you a real live human baby to love.

Oh Kate, thats wonderful news. Now your life will change forever..in a wonderful way. Someday you'll get your child a furry and they will know what it means to love and care for something. I believe every child should have a pet, it adds so much more to their lives. Keep us updated on all the goings on and we look forward to pictures to follow. Congrats again!!!!

Kate!!! So nice to hear from you! Congratulations!!!
I remember your issues with Lucky and how you poured your heart out for him.... Lucky was lucky he had you.
Can't wait to see pictures!

Hi Kate, We relative newcomers to the board welcome hearing the old stories. Your Lucky must have been a wonderful kitty and it is so sad that she didn't get the medical care she needed so much of the time. But now you have a happy occasion to look forward to, and Lucky will be smiling from the other side of the Bridge. Thanks for posting! Hoping to hear lots more.

Ella & Stu

KATE!!!! This is so awesome! A baby, wowee! I could just hug you.... what a wonderful announcement, I couldn't be more happy for you! I know you will be a terrific mommy and I hope your little one will someday have the strong love for furry animals that you have. Your heart will always be kinder because of the love you gave to your sweet (and feisty) kitty, Lucky. (((Kate)))

Kate!!!! How nice to see "Kate and Lucky" in a condo this morning!!! It was the first one I opened, expecting to see exactly what Libby thought...that you got yourself a new furball...Then I saw the baby thing and Woohoo!!! Congratulations girlfriend!!! That is just wonderful news! I am so happy for you and DH!

Thanks also, for posting Lucky's story. I didn't know the whole story behind the vets over there, but knew there was a problem. I remember well the stories that Heather and Eric posted as they tried to give Lucky her insulin and how I sat on the edge of my seat waiting for each post to see what happened. I also remember the sadness when Lucky had to cross the bridge. It was one of the saddest days in LL. I get so excited when I see you posting in ours and others condos because it's nice to see that you are still around :-D

btw...Spot is nearing his second round of an OTJ trial and I'm thinking this one just may stick!!

Have a wonderful day and HUGS all the way around!!!

Hi - I'm new and never met you - but congrats! What good news!

And how scary to hear what you had to go through with your furbaby, Lucky. I've traveled a lot and if you had told me that you'd experience that in a third world country, I might understand - but Germany?!?! Very sad and disturbing... So sorry for your painful experiences.

But on to brighter things. May your new little bundle of joy bring you much love and luck and hope. Best wishes...

Oh Kate! I am so happy for you! :-D
Thank you so much for sharing this. This is just soooo cool. Happy happy tears :-D Gosh. What a smile I have on my face.

Oh Kate I am so happy for you! What wonderful news! This little baby of yours has no idea what a wonderful Mommy she or he is getting. Do you know which it is?

I too will never forget your feisty little Lucky. What a wonderful kitty. I'm sure Lucky is so happy for you and that he'll be standing guard over your new little one.

Keep us posted on how things are going. It's so good to see you again.

Oh, Kate, that is fabulous news! I so much remember Lucky and everything you went through with her. Congratulations on the new addition to be....and remember, pictures, lots of pictures!

Thank you for sharing your story with us, for those who were not on the board at that time.
My heart goes out to you in all that you went through with Lucky.

Congratulations on your baby on the way.
Truly a blessing.

CONGRATULATIONS !!

I have one prediction about your baby ---- he/she will definitely be a cat lover :-D cat_pet_icon

I'm sure Lucky will be watching over from the bridge.

Thank you everyone for your good wishes.

Exciting times ahead!

I want a surprise so no idea if it's a boy or a girl. There will definitely be lots of pics!

Hi Kate - thanks for sharing your story as we shed tears too. My friend Penny once told me life is like a brick of swiss cheese: once you have a whole in your heart from the loss of someone you love, it never goes away. Instead your life & more love just builds up around it so it is not quite as noticeable but it is always there. We are glad to hear you are building up lots of love in your life now. Congratulations on your baby, Mom. Happy Mother's Day too.

Susan & Lanky

PS Thanks for stopping by our Condo the other day, we appreciated you input & suggestions.

Hi Kate, thanks for the update and congrats! LL misses you and Lucky. I remember the sadness of the posting when Lucky crossed over the Bridge. Please come and visit anytime! Hey, are you having the baby over there or coming back to the US? How will that work for citizenship if you stay there?

Kate, congratulations! And of course this is the perfect day to share the news with us -- your very first Mother's Day!

Boy or girl, this will be a very "lucky" baby, to have you.

:YMHUG: from Lantus Landers on this side of the pond!

Kate thanks for sharing your story with us. I do not know you but our hearts are connected through our furry friends. Sorry for your loss last year but god bless for the new one to come! Congrats to you and your family!

Congratulations, Kate! I'm so happy for you. I loved Lucky, and I know she's watching you from the bridge. Maybe she'll send you a new kitty one of these days, too.

Thank you for sharing your story Kate! I've only been around here for a little over 2 months now, and Max is OTJ. It really is wonderful to be part of this community, isn't it? I'm so sorry to hear about how Lucky passed, I'm sure that was agonizing for you. They really do burrow into your heart, and gap left by their loss is never filled again.

Congratulations on your baby! I've got two little ones myself (Jared is only 7 months!), and while they cost you a lot of sleep, they're absolutely worth it. We didn't find out the gender of either of ours before they were born--that's the way it's meant to be, and makes delivery soooooo much more exciting! The surprise, and hearing my husband tell me what each of them was, was absolutely priceless. :-D

That's such a sad story about your Lucky. I've read parts of it here before, but hearing the whole thing makes me sad--and angry, too, that you has such a horrible time of it.

BUT--Congratulations on your wonderful news!

Joyce-tuscany

Thank you everyone for your kind wishes. It is a very exciting time, though I'm already feeling like a beached whale!!!

I'm from the UK Joyce, so not a problem with citizenship.Having baby here, but don't know beyond that right now, will depend on DBF's job :-D
