Hi! My kitty Crazy Horse died 13 years ago. While he was alive this message board was a massive source of support for both of us. Crazy and I grew closer while treating his diabetes, and I still miss him so much. It's taken me 13 years to be ready to have another pet, but one has recently chosen me, and I'm turning to you wonderful people for advice on what I should feed him.

My memory isn't what it once was, so I don't remember what I used to feed Crazy. I opened Janet & Binky's food charts, but they don't seem to have been updated since 2008. I'd like to buy my new baby, Leo, canned food over the internet, hopefully maximizing Rakuten cashback/points. Leo seems to like all food, and I want to choose something that will keep him as healthy as can be. What markers am I looking for? He's 8 lbs., and I want to keep him trim and healthy.

Thank you so much!

Welcome back NaNa & Leo, below is Dr Pierce Food chart,(it is from 2017, but the new food flavors are added, as introduced to the market) if Leo is or not diabetic remember that he should have a diet of 0-10% carbs, and stay away from dry foods and treats as they are very high in carbs 20-25% sometimes more, so if he is not diabetic you will make sure he never gets there with low carb foods, the third column on the chart are the carbs, and you have many brands to choose from, a lot of the members can relate very well to Fancy Feast Pates, it has many flavors, and USA, if you are in the US Chewy.com is a great choice to buy online, made which no waste goes in them, we are here to help, any concern you may have is never small

Actually, the author of the food chart that has replace Janet & Binky's list (I remember it too!) is authored by Lisa Pierson, DVM. She's a vet who has a very active interest in feline nutrition. She has also posted here on occasion. You might want to take a look at her website which contains a great deal of information on nutrition and health.

The basic principles to keep in mind for all cats -- nondiabetic and diabetic alike -- is that cats are obligate carnivores. That means that they are not able to process anything other than protein. They tend to do best on a diet of high quality protein -- think muscle meat versus "animal by-products." However, the high/human quality cat foods are pricy so a lot may depend on what's affordable for you. Chances are you were feeding Crazy Horse Fancy Feast or Friskies. Many members also opt to feed their cats a raw diet. Homemade is less expensive than commercially prepared raw food. There are air-dried and freeze dried raw diets vs what's in a refrigerator or freezer at a store. You also want to feed your kitty a canned food diet. Cats do not have a strong thirst drive and there is a great deal more moisture in canned food vs dry food diets. Basically, if you consider what a cat eats in the wild, you'll be on the right track.

Thanks so much, Gabby. I've bought Leo Friskies and Fancy Feast, after scouring the new food chart. What a wonderful resource! As are all of you fine people. Lots of love to you all!!
