This question has probably been answered here many times, but I couldn't find anything on the topic.
My Vetsulin is 3 months and 3 weeks old, since I first used it. It is kept in the fridge but twice during hurricane season the fridge lost power for about 6 hours.
Normally I give my 15 year old cat about 1 unit of insulin but it has become completely ineffective. My vet wont approve the prescription for more without an office visit, otherwise I would already have ordered new Vetsulin. Since they made me mad, I am going to a new vet but cant get there until Monday.
Today is Tuesday and it will be about a week until I have more Vetsulin.
I have upped her to 2 units and her numbers on a human meter are staying around 328 at lowest, but normally vetsulin has a drop that takes her to 70. Her numbers aren't going higher than 378, so I am wondering if I should up her dose on the old insulin or take her off it. I don't have a way to check ketones, but she is eating and drinking normally, just seems a little more tired than usual.
The insulin looks fine, no strings, mixes to cloudy, smells fine. Is it better to give her more of the insulin if I think it is just too old to work, or to give her less?
Thanks in advance for all of your help and opinions!
