Hello,
Seymore is my companion of almost 15 years, he has been off the juice for many months now. He is on fancy feast classics, but cannot get him to gain weight! He is a big eater, at least 3 cans a day! I dont want him to become insulin dependant again, but he is too underweight!

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated

Darcy

How much does he weigh? My 12 pound cat can easily down 3 cans of FF a day. He'd probably eat like 10 if I let him. Just feed him more, or you could try feeding a higher fat high calorie food like Wellness or EVO too.

I feed Evo and Wellness primarily because George was very underweight. He's gaining a few ounces a week on 1.5 cans per day. He weighs about 11 pounds now and should probably weigh 12. I may spend .50 more a day over the FF or Friskies prices, but it's worth it.

Thank you! I have to find where I can get evo or wellness....I live in a small community and dont have much of a selection.

Up the calorie density by feeding a kitten food or a food intended for nursing moms.
Fancy Feast Kitten Turkey and Giblets pate might work.
Evo Cat & Kitten is another one.

Also look at the food tables - for cats and dogs, 1 gram of fat is 8.5 calories, while 1 gram of either protein or carbohydrate is 3.5 calories. The more fat, the higher calorie density per ounce. It is rare to find a low carb food with a balanced amount of fat and protein; usually there is more fat, because it is cheaper than more protein.

your cat sounds just like mine. Leo is 14 yrs old and he needs to gain weight. I too feed him 3 cans of FF but he still seems hungry. I never thought about the kitten food.

I don't know what your shipping situation is, but I get Wellness turkey and chicken flavors (4% carbs) by the case via Amazon. My cat needed to gain weight at dx and has been able to get back to his optimal weight on this stuff. I would imagine it's mostly due to the insulin taking effect so his body can process the food better, but I haven't had any issues with Wellness to date.
