So...Max, my diabetic kitty, is still doing just fine with his sugars, and totally OTJ. I checked him last night and he was at a beautiful 84, about 3 hours after wolfing down his dinner. :-D

BUT...someone in our house has been bleeding. I think it's coming from the mouth as it is watery. We've found it in the bathtub on multiple occasions in the last week. I've checked both cats' mouths, and neither one of them fought me more than they usually would (no hissing, no biting, no swatting), and I couldn't see anything amiss. We've now found a few blood spots (again, watery) on the carpet in the bedrooms (we have laminate everywhere else in the house, and with the dog tracking in snow regularly, we've been mopping a lot...so no surprise to not see blood anywhere else, really).

Now my instincts are saying the blood is coming from Max, but I don't know why. And yesterday DH and I actually caught Max squatting like he was peeing on the landing of the basement steps (there is carpet there as well and is not a highly-trafficked spot). There WAS a wet spot there, but it was not bloody.

Truman, on the other hand, has herpiviral conjunctivitis (sp?). We have some lysine gel that I give him when this flares up, which it has been over the last week or so. We only notice he's having a flare because he starts 'winking' at us--the infected eye blinks almost twice as often as the other one. And when he was diagnosed, the vet said it would flare anytime he was sick or had an injury (the diagnosis came shortly after Max scratched the edge of his eye, about a year and a half ago...and no flares since then).

Neither cat has a visible injury. Both are acting normal (other than Truman being 'winky'). One of them has had some mild mushy poo a few times over the last week, but the boxes are in the basement and we don't see who is using them at any given time. Both cats are eating normally. Both seem happy, tho they have been fighting a bit more than usual.

My dilemma: Which cat do I take to the vet? I can't take off a whole day from work (I work 40 minutes from home, and the vet is near home) to take them both in, and I can't take them both at the same time. Truman has to be given Benedryl before going and he still freaks out, which freaks Max out, and then they both end up being un-examinable because they're growling and biting. Any suggestions?

Could it be bloody urine spots? I have seen that from two of my cats.

Based on this statement:
"Now my instincts are saying the blood is coming from Max, but I don't know why. And yesterday DH and I actually caught Max squatting like he was peeing on the landing of the basement steps (there is carpet there as well and is not a highly-trafficked spot). Max may have a urinary problem. Is Max urinating adequately otherwise?

I agree it sounds like a urinary tract problem. Is it possible to put one cat in one room with a litter box and the other in a second room also with a box? When you return from work, you may be able to determine which room or litter box shows blood. Also, you may be able to tell whether they are urinating normally or not.

But if your gut says Max, you are likely right. Never discount the gut.

Larry--As far as I know, Max is urinating fine. Both cats are eating (low-carb canned only, with water mixed in). We've not observed either cat drinking water in quite some time thanks to adding the water to their food. We haven't found urine spots anywhere other than that one we saw him making yesterday. Also, the blood spots we've found in the bathtub don't smell like urine, tho I suppose the blood scent could overwhelm the urine scent? But yes, I do plan to mention the urinary possibility to the vet.

Venita--Oh, I wish I had rooms to separate them! ;-) Our house is an open floor-plan, with no walls other than the bedrooms. I'm not willing to put a litterbox and angry kitty in my kids' room, nor do I really want one in my own. The bathroom is too small to coop a full grown cat in for 10 hours.

Thank you all, tho, I will take Max in first. I was figuring that was the thing to do anyway, but without having any concrete evidence that it's either one of them, it's hard to make that decision, ya know? :-D

Given your limited rooms, what about getting a largish kitty condo so you can corral 1 cat when needed for observation, or for confining after anesthesia?

And if a cat produces lots of pee, it will be very dilute and not smell much, so lack of odor is a clue to the most likely candidate too -> Max is likely to have the most dilute urine of your cats, even if well controlled.

Thanks BJ!

I have an appt at the vet for Max on Wednesday morning at 8am. They didn't have any openings for tomorrow unless I took the whole day off of work and I just can't if it isn't an emergency. She did say it was good he was on canned food only, and didn't think it should be a urinary issue, but with catching Max doing that yesterday it certainly could be.

Of course, if Max's behavior changes, we'll get him in to the ER vet, or I'll take tomorrow off and get him in to our regular vet.

Truman is going in on Saturday, so if it isn't Max, then we'll figure it out by then. :-)
