Obsession with water?

Just a lighthearted post... I'm wondering how many of our sugar kitties have developed an obsession with water along with their diabetes?

Nipper has started splashing water from her water bowl all over the floor. She's never done that before this week, but I keep finding the kitchen floor wet and finally caught her at it. She puts a paw in the bowl and then flings the water onto the floor. Also she is apparently pushing the bowl around the room, as it is never where I left it.

Anyway I mentioned it to my vet and she said that a weird obsession with water often accompanies the excessive drinking in diabetic cats.

Then I thought back... about 6 months before Scout's diagnosis, she suddenly became obsessed with the shower. After anyone got out of the shower she would sit in or next to the tub, all twitchy, watching the water drip and meowing her head off. She didn't try to get in while the shower was on or get wet. I could never figure out what the deal was, I just put it down to her being a little dim. :-D

Anyone got any good stories?

From time to time my Chicken Little will sit at the water bowl and stick her paw in the water and then drink it from her paw. She does not do this very often anymore but when she does I think its darn cute. Using her paw like a spoon. She did it more when her pal George was alive but not so much since he passed away. It was really cute to see her do it when he (George) was drinking out of the bowl and she would reach over him and get herself a paw full of water.
They come up with some of the most cute antics sometimes!! flip_cat

Yes Silver did exactly that, played and fished in his water and moved his bowl all round the room. I thought he was just being daft. Now, he barely even drinks from it.

But on another note...both my cats have been obsessed with the shower since they were kittens. They used to jump in as soon as I got out and chase the droplets running down the shower door. They would come out with wet butts.

Hidey loves it! He always has though, even before becoming diabetic. He likes to play in it but also dips his paw in it and drinks it out of his paw.

No water obsessed kitties here at my house, just a shower obsessed one. He'll go racing around the bedroom and then jump into the shower to get away from the other cat that he just smacked. The shower is his hiding spot. So far, I've never turned the shower on while he's in there but I'm sure it will happen sometime.

I bought one of those rubber hot plates to put under one of my cats food dish. His food dish has to be ceramic or glass to prevent chin acne. By putting his dish on that little circle of rubber, it acts like a "sticky spot" and his dish stays put so much better now. Thought something similar might help you with your kitty pushing the dish around.

Thanks for the advice, Deb. I tried wedging it behind their heavy ceramic food dishes but that did not stop her. I will try a piece of rubber under it and see if that helps.

At least she's doing something other than sitting in her cardboard box and looking pathetic. :(
